| | Softies Holiday In Rhode Island CD Softies Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
On Holiday in Rhode Island, the Softies continue their simple and sweet variety of heart-on-their-sleeve indie pop. On "Sleep Away Your Troubles," the melody between Rose Melberg and Jen Sbragia showcases the duo's simple and refreshing instrumentation and musical approach. The songs remain introspective and focused on the frailties of human relationships. The band never bought into the standard indie pop sound, instead focusing on a storytelling approach, rarely singing much above a hushed whisper. Even somber songs like "These Sad Times" and "The Beginning of the End" retain dashes of optimism intertwined with the overall melancholy mood of the songs. The duo's wistful songs like "Me and the Bees" and the title track create a poignant and mellow environment that few bands are able to match. Melberg's soft and tender vocals lead the way on all of the tracks. With this disc, Melberg solidified herself as one of the most disarming vocalists in the indie scene. ~ Stephen Cramer

Holiday In Rhode Island
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. ...

| | Doors Legacy: The Absolute Best CDs (1967)

Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. | | Richard Hawley Lowedges CD (2003)
Holiday In Rhode Island
$12.19 Though it was this album's follow-up, COLES CORNER, that was Richard Hawley's mainstream breakthrough, 2003's LOWEDGES alerted the British chamber pop cognoscenti that former session guitarist Richard Hawley was a talent to be reckoned with. At a time when the majority of his compatriots on the U.K. indie scene were taking their cues from the politely twee Belle and Sebastian, LOWEDGES was far richer stuff; a layered, emotionally shaded, and beautifully textured album with detailed arrangements, melodic songwriting, and emotive vocals that recall the best work of chamber pop cult hero Scott Walker, as well as Nick Drake's semi-orchestral BRYTER LAYER. First single "Run For Me" is a minor masterpiece ...
| | Amy Farris Anyway CD (2004)
Holiday In Rhode Island
$14.69 As a backing player and vocalist for Alejandro Escovedo, Kelly Willis, and others, violinist/singer/songwriter Amy Farris has accumulated substantial experience with some of Austin's most accomplished and recognizable names. On her debut solo disc -- produced by roots rocker Dave Alvin -- Farris proves that she is every bit as talented as those she's played with. Boasting a sensitive but strong voice that merges bits of Patsy Cline, Maria Muldaur, Nanci Griffith, Dolly Parton, and Willis, Farris combines earthy country, folk, swing, and pop to produce an intriguing and thoroughly enjoyable Americana mix. An unusual but striking cover of Scott Walker's "Big Louise" shows that her influences run deeper than the typical strummy Austin fare, and her violin and viola add sadness and a European feel to much of this music. Supported by a terrific band led by Alvin ...
