Future Sound Of London: Gary Cobain, Brian Dougans. Recorded at EarthBeat Studios, London, England. Composers: Brian Dougans; Garry Cobain. Personnel: Elizabeth Fraser (vocals). Unknown Contributor Roles: Brian Dougans; Garry Cobain; Grossart; Williams; Nightingale; Richard Thompson; Robert Fripp. Having indulged in more explicitly ambient realms with the Amorphous Androgynous side project, FSOL returned to full action with Lifeforms, a double-disc effort that ranks as one of the best experimental techno releases of the '90s. If not as immediately memorable on a song per song basis as, say, Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works collections, as an overall piece, Lifeforms makes for an inventive, fascinating aural experience, as rich and detailed as the Orb's best work. Where FSOL differs from that band in particular is the comparative lack of overt humor and less immediate desire to make people groove -- this is something to listen to rather than necessarily dance to. In comparison to Accelerator, this is an extremely subtle listen, with rhythms generally buried in the mix, serving the melodies rather than vice versa. In comparison to the upfront breaks and steady house beats just two years previous, here they're stuttered, echoed, often approaching dub in pace and impact. Meanwhile, the space-alien bubbles and noises and haunting tones take to the fore, making for a disorienting, evocative experience, a mix of natural sounds and artificial elements much like the band's own artwork. Even the singles, "Cascade" and "Lifeforms," play down the beat. The one for "Cascade" is barely there, swooping samples and soft synth hooks to the fore, while "Lifeforms," for its comparatively more direct impact, relies as much on its keyboard swell and chiming melody as much as the complex overlay of rhythms. There are a few guest appearances here and there, but they're mostly notable for how the band incorporate them instead of letting them stand out -- Robert Fripp's guitar on "Flak," Talvin Singh's tablas on "Life Form Ends," and Toni Halliday from Curve doing a "vocal texture" on "Cerebral." ~ Ned Raggett This album--or soundscape, as it could be described--is quite simply spellbinding. Released during an especially productive period for the loosely termed "ambient music," LIFEFORMS had considerable impact upon the musical picture of 1994. Few (if any) outfits could claim to have bettered FSOL's epic offering that year. LIFEFORMS equally rewards both intensive and passive listening. Intensive listening reveals a taut structure, with long periods of timelessness suddenly pushed onward by contemporary dub and house beats. Passive listening gives a 90-minute collage of sound that provides a chilled-out antidote to the pace of modern life. Running water, distant chants, tribal rhythms, and various Eno-esque noises are all presented here in glorious surround-sound. Listening on headphones reveals the beauty of the soundscape even more brilliantly. FSOL must have spent many a late night learning how to employ sound technology so well. It's time well spent, though, as LIFEFORMS is a masterpiece that stands comparison with great ambient albums by the Orb, Brian Eno, and the KLF. Recommended without reservation.Spin (9/94, p.142) - Highly Recommended - "...God bless the Future Sound Of London--Gary Cobain and Brian Dougans--for striving to infuse personality and humanity into the chip-driven technoscape..." Alternative Press (7/95, p.115) - "...Future Sound Of London's flowing material forms true sound gardens, within which can be heard the rich heritage of the masters of the first Golden Age of Electronics: Klaus Schulze, Ash Ra Tempel, and Tangerine Dream..." Option (11-12/94, p.117) - "...LIFEFORMS is sensory overload that engages the mind instead of alienating it. Throughout the 92-minute program, the `trips' that ambient techno aims to replicate happen naturally and vividly..." New York Times (Publisher) (1/5/95, p.C15) - Included on Jon Pareles' list of the Top 10 Albums Of '94 - "Ambient music that dares to have a personality..." NME (Magazine) (12/24/94, p.23) - Ranked #37 in NME's list of the `Top 50 Albums Of 1994.' Future Sound Of London Lifeforms Songs Lifeforms Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Epitome Of Atmospheric Music This is only one of "Future Sound Of London"'s examples of extreme talent. Atmospheric tones woven together with subtle melodies make for awesome background music, perfect for almost any event. It's a music you could listen to kinda low to make for your own, personal life's soundtrack. It's relaxing and, most of all, beautiful music. This is an album anyone who likes techno should own. A Masterpiece! This is one of those finely-crafted musical works that takes you on a journey to worlds beyond human comprehension - to the vast, unvisted lands of the farthest reaches of the universe, and to the tiniest quantum realms within everything around you. Future Sound of London has crafted music and soundscapes that our ears have never heard before. How refreshingly creative! Turn off all the lights, close your eyes, and LISTEN while you are lead on a magnificent journey! Lifeforms is a marvelous electronic composition that still retains an amazingly organic atmosphere. The production and sonic quality are equally enthrawling. This disc is a MUST HAVE for any audiophile's collection!

Enlightening! Holy cow! This is amazing! The first time I listened to it I wasn't impressed, however, I was expecting something different. Broaden your horizions when you listen to this CD and find that it is your favorite! It is amazing, the first time I really listened to it I went up in my room's closet in front of my computer and shut every thing off, turned on a lava lamp and put on my headphones. This CD is truly a magical experience. It is inspirational and the people who made it are very skilled with ambience and otherwise. I definently reccomend this to anyone who likes ambience/techno, and people who would enjoy laid-back easy listeneing. Submitted by stealthninja833 (My Computer) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Electronic music at its very best Listening to Lifeforms is about more than simply hearing the sounds. It is a creative experience, and fuels your imagination by lifting your mind to another level for 90 minutes.
Like a good movie, no matter how many times you play it, it loses none of is magic. In fact, just like that movie, Lifeforms manages to grow in its brilliance.
Whenever your rocker/indie/metal friend is dismissing electronic music with their usual holier-than-thou attitude, put this album on. Then ask them to look you in the eye and say in all honesty that it's not something very special. Submitted by adrian_young (Scotland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$12.35 Future Sound Of London: Garry Cobain, Brian Dougans. This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Future Sound Of London. Future Sound Of London: Gary Cobain, Brian Dougans. Compared to where most of the band's career would later go, Accelerator is a fairly conventional debut from the duo -- certainly it's the most explicitly commercial-minded the duo ever was, slotting in well with many other early-'90s U.K. dance/techno outfits. As ...
