| | Doves Lost Souls CD Doves Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
While some rock groups have been known to lean heavily on electronic elements (Radiohead, the Flaming Lips), it's rare for an electronica act to morph into a rock band. But that's exactly what the Manchester, England dance trio Sub Sub did when they reinvented themselves as Doves. Surprisingly enough, the Britpop group's bold 2000 debut, LOST SOULS, arrived fully formed, revealing airy shoegazer atmospherics anchored by a muscular, stadium-ready sound.
The album opens with the dream-like "Firesuite," which gives way to the surging, soul-tinged "Here It Comes." Throughout the record, the band--consisting of Jimi Goodwin and brothers Jez and Andy Williams, who all share vocal and instrumental duties--maintains a hypnotically dark tone that's best showcased on the haunting "Sea Song" and the echo-laden "Rise." And unlike many front-loaded rock discs, LOST SOULS saves its most energetic, guitar-heavy tracks until later in the album, with the driving "Catch the Sun" and "The Cedar Room" (one of Doves' most soaringly anthemic songs) pushing things along. Hailed at the time by many UK publications as one of the strongest British rock debuts in years, LOST SOULS more than lives up to its lauded reputation and lays down a solid foundation for Doves' subsequent outings.

Lost Souls music CDs
$11.89 Initial copies of THE LAST BROADCAST include a limited edition bonus disc of 4 previously unreleased songs.
England's Doves began as teenage purveyors of feel-good dance music in the early '90s as Sub Sub, and even scored a minor hit. After a studio fire cost them their equipment along with demos of their second release, the members of Sub Sub forged ahead, transform their sound and renaming themselves. With 200's LOST SOULS, Doves blew up in England and garnered a cult following in the states, signaling a mess of anticipation for 2002's THE LAST BROADCAST.
LAST BROADCAST clearly owes heaps to early-'90s shoegazing bands like Ride and Lush, nowhere more so than on the dizzying, spiraling "Words." At other times THE LAST BROADCAST recalls the Manchester (not coincidentally ...

THE STONE ROSES was one of those albums that defined a cultural moment-especially in the Roses' native England, where their music was the soundtrack for 1989's now-legendary summer of raves and Ecstasy. When the quartet released the classic, nine-minute single "Fool's Gold," mixing jangling/droning, psychedelic-tinged guitars with ...

| | Gresham It's Always Been There CD (2003)
Lost Souls CD music
$14.75 Records by skateboard hero Tommy Guerrero possess a shambling glory that's allied to the rich (if not particularly long) tradition of experimental four-track recording. The first album by Guerrero's friend Gresham (Taylor) has that same lo-fi charm, plus an expanded view of hook-laden acoustic pop, all delivered in a yearning, sun-soaked voice -- occasionally recalling Adam Duritz or Lou Barlow (in a good way) -- that fits the record perfectly. Gresham's better at standard songwriting than Guerrero, and the off-kilter productions give these standard pop songs a bite that's a great balance between pop and experimentation. Just a few songs lean uncomfortably close to experimenting for its own sake, as on "Tony Ishmar," when the band appears to be attempting to recall Tortoise, or indulging in a half-hearted Steely Dan impersonation. Most of the time, however, the ambling passages are integrated well; the transition from "Octopus" to "Come In" definitely benefits from recordings of kids on the playground (and the ...
| | Whatever It Takes Punk Revival Fistful Of Revolution CD (2003)
Lost Souls music CDs
$10.35 Additional personnel includes: The Code, Better Off Dead, The Vacancy (background vocals).
Whatever It Takes is a sideline project for Chris #2 of the notorious Pittsburgh punk band Anti-Flag, for whom he plays bass; as frontman for Whatever It Takes, he plays guitar and acts as lead yeller. This CD brings together two previous releases: the full-length Fistful of Revolution album and the eight-track Stars & Skulls EP, both of which were originally issued in extremely limited numbers (the latter came out only in a minimally packaged CD-R format, and the band only sold a few hundred copies before pronouncing it out of print). Both find the quartet carrying on in the same general vein as Anti-Flag, that of noisy but fairly melodic punk rock. Whatever It Takes is maybe just ...
