Gold Record album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she ...

| | Snoop Dogg Malice N Wonderland CD (2009)
Gold Record music CDs
$12.54 On his tenth album (and first as the chairman of Priority Records), Snoop Dogg continues to prove he's not a relic of the G-funk era, proving that while the music may change, good flow never goes out of style. Right out of the gate, Snoop drops a song for the West Coast Jerkin' set with "I Wanna Rock" before switching gears back to classic Snoop with the Dre-inspired "2 Minute Warning," where the rapper lets everyone know he's still the same Snoop Dogg after all these years as he proclaims, "Ponytail still swingin', hair still braided/Laker to a Clipper I won't be faded." With production by Lil Jon, Timbaland, Danjahandz, Battlecat, and the Neptunes (just to name a handful), it's no wonder the album sounds like not only a retrospective of every stage of his career, but of the trends in rap music as a whole. With the album touching on ...
| | Angie Stone Unexpected CD (2009)
Gold Record songs
$13.10 On her second album for Concord's Stax imprint (and fourth overall), Angie Stone delves deeper into funk and hip-hop than on her previous outings. Her last offering, The Art of Love & War, was a critical and commercial triumph for the vastly underrated vocalist, and topped the Billboard chart. With a slew of producers including Sly Williams, Willie "Chuck" Shivers, Karrim King and ...

| | Godley & Creme Images CD (1994) Australia
Gold Record music CDs
$9.75 After splitting from English pop outfit 10cc in the mid-'70s, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme put out a string of eccentric but stylish pop albums that yielded a number of hit singles in Europe. However, Godley & Creme often got bogged down in self-consciously clever experimentation when making their albums (for example, Consequences began as a two-song single but spiraled into a triple album), and this experimentation could cause the best tracks on these albums to get buried. Thus, Images is a welcome way to sample the duo's hits as well as the well-crafted pop songs that were often overlooked on their albums. The highlight is the international smash hit "Cry," a lush ballad about heartbreak that puts aside cleverness and sonic trickery to create an accessible song with true emotional power. Other highlights include "An Englishman in New York," a 10cc-styled tune that explores the Big Apple through the eyes of weary and bewildered foreigner, and "My Body the Car," a catchy tune whose rhythmic background track consists entirely of studio-based manipulations of the human voice. "Wide Boy" is another engaging track, a surprisingly hard-rocking putdown of a romantic rival that features some spirited sax playing. Unfortunately, Images omits a few important tracks despite its generous running time; the most notable omission is "Snack Attack," the group's 1981 hit. Also, the eccentric humor that informs many of tracks may turn off the casual listener ("The Party" is a sarcastic putdown of entertainment-biz gatherings that will either tickle the listener's funny bone or drive them to distraction with its lack of pop hooks), but Images remains the best way to sample the career of Godley & Creme. ~ Donald A. | | Mouse On Mars Live04 CD (2005) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Gold Record CD music
$41.39 This 2005 release of recordings by German electronica group Mouse On Mars includes "Mine Is In Yours" and "All The Old Powers."
Anyone fortunate enough to see Mouse on Mars live -- particularly on their Idiology or Radical Connector tours -- knows that the group sheds the restraint they usually show on record for a jubilant, almost hedonistic energy that's more about dancing than chin-stroking. Compiled from various stops on the group's 2004 North American and European tours, Live04 documents that energy with Mouse on Mars' first official live album. Since these dates were recorded the same year the group released Radical Connector, it's not surprising that Live04's track listing is heavy on songs from that album. "Heavy" also describes the way these performances sound; Radical Connector was pretty dancefloor-ready to begin with, and the songs from it sound even more amped-up here. The nine-minute version of "Wipe That Sound" is downright anthemic, and "All the Old Powers"' beat sounds even more like large objects being tossed around and smashed to bits. "Mine Is in Yours" really benefits from the extra, in-concert oomph, sounding much bigger and badder than previously imagined, as well as a whole lot funkier, thanks to a huge, fuzzy synth bass that hasn't been heard since the likes of Eddy Grant's "Electric Avenue." However, the rest of Live04's selections are pretty diverse, skipping from expected (but still great) performances of Idiology's mighty single "Actionist Respoke" and Autoditacker's classic "Twift," to a surprising amount of tracks from Niun Niggung (the speedy, electrifying run-through of that album's "Distroia" is one of the album's peaks) to the sparkly, majestic finale, "Frosch," which goes all the way back to Mouse on Mars' 1994 debut album, Vulvaland. Considering that these performances were culled from different shows, Live04 sounds remarkably cohesive; the album's only disappointment is that Niobe, the vocalist whose tracks were among Radical Connector's very best, didn't join Mouse on Mars on tour, so none of her songs are represented here. ...
