Those expecting a simple solo drummer showcase from the man who led both Yes and King Crimson into the deepest of topographic oceans should, upon listening to Bruford's independent exploits, be pleasantly surprised. ONE OF A KIND, album number two for the Bruford band, sows Bruford's wild jazz roots for once and all, peppered judiciously with numerous elements of his freewheeling prog rock past.
To accompany his nimble rhythmic travails, he assembled a crackerjack squad of supporting players. Together this quartet recorded the symphonic prog of "The Sahara of Snow," the electronic shabazz of "Hell's Bells," and the undeniably gorgeous fusion-bop of "The Abingdon Chasp." Rarely has an album title been so accurate.
Recorded at Trident Studios, London, England in January & February 1979.
Personnel: Bill Bruford (spoken vocals, drums); Jeff Berlin (vocals, electric bass); Sam Alder, Anthea Norman-Taylor (spoken vocals); Allan Holdsworth (guitar); Dave Stewart (keyboards).
Bill Bruford One Of A Kind Songs One Of A Kind Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Don't ask me to classify this style! Other than GREAT! What do you call this music? Definitely rock-influenced...but musically complex, definitely jazz influenced. The highly capable ensemble does it fast, slow, loud, and very gentle, but does it all with little connection to traditional expectations.
Bruford, a first-class, veteran drummer, relies little on steady tempos and standard time signatures. Everything is a bit "way out there". He even inserts a short narrative from "Alice in Wonderland". And it all works well.
The closest comparison I can make for this album is another one in which Bruford played: U.K.'s self-titled album from 1977. Also highly recommended. This album is probably not for everyone (musically complex), but will contribute to the growth of any serious musician or music lover. great jazz rock allbum ! After departing from sinfo band UK,Bruford made this great LP !,with UK mate Allan Holdsworth(ex soft machine) ,Keyboardist Dave Stewart (Egg,Hatfield and the North,National Health) and great bassist Jeff Berlin, the compositions are a mixture of songs that was composed for UK (and also played live as forever till sundat and the saharas of snow )with compositions arranged with the new band, this was Bruford second solo album and one of the best ! One of a kind I first heard this album when I was a teen and getting my feet wet as a guitar player. I agree with all of the other reviews in that it has stood the test of time. Excellent collaboration between Holdsworth, Stewart, Bruford and Berlin. In fact, I saw Bruford at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI in 1979. Excellent show even without Holdsworth on guitar. I believe it was John "the unknown" Clark on guitar. I think this was right around the time Bruford released "Gradually Going Toranado" and "The Bruford Tapes". Both good albums, but in my opinion not as good as "One of a kind". Submitted by Rob "The Attack" (Germantown, WI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Astounding Album This is the second instrumental album Bill Bruford and Alan Holdsworth and Co. recorded after their departure from the supergroup U.K. in the late 70's. Although the trademark drum and guitar parts of U.K. are quite apparent, this album gives a new, fresher and more jazzy feeling which differs from all that Bill Bruford did while in Yes, King Crimson and U.K. Definitely a must-have piece for Bruford and Holdsworth fans and all prog-rock lovers. Great album by great musicians at their best. Unquestionably five stars. Strongly recommended. Submitted by bakushevi (Toronto, ON, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Stands the test of time - ****** Originally turned on to this album in the 70's and today its still my favorite. Tight, energetic and an excellent example of Jazz - Rock fusion. Holdsworth steals the show along with a Bruford backbeat driving the listener through a total life experience of mood and emotion.
Must have - no doubt!

| | Porcupine Tree In Absentia CD (2002)
One Of A Kind album
$8.55 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.
Hailed by Billboard as 'cinematic...simple gorgeous', Porcupine Tree ...
| | Gentle Giant Free Hand CD (1975) Anniversary Edition; 35th Anniversary Edition
One Of A Kind CD music
$11.19 The follow-up to 1974's surprisingly well-received THE POWER & THE GLORY, Gentle Giant's FREE HAND marks the pinnacle of the British prog-rock group's international success. (Like its predecessor, it appeared on the U.S. charts.) While the band's eccentricities--complex song structures, strange vocal ...

| | Platinum Pied Pipers Triple P CD (2005)
One Of A Kind songs
$13.59 The funny thing about Platinum Pied Pipers is that they're neither platinum nor much like the self-proclaimed pied piper of R&B, R. Kelly. They're underground, no larger than life, yet wholly contemporary -- a pair of Detroit producers who introduced their way of doing things with interpretations of Burt Bacharach's pop staple "The Look of Love" (sounding more like a Cameo tape after being rescued from a puddle) and Faze-O's rare-groove classic "Riding High" (relatively straightforward, as easy as a summer afternoon spent in the back seat of a convertible). These and other cuts appeared on Ubiquity's Rewind! series of compilations. They built up a lot of promise, all of which is fulfilled on the duo's first album. Slum Village vet Waajeed and Barrett Strong protégé Saadiq conduct Triple P Quincy Jones-style, appearing on the cover while otherwise remaining in the background. With help from a handful of MCs and vocalists, the producers/musicians cook up a varied array of hybridized backdrops that update 30 years of soul, hip-hop, and crossover jazz. Three songs featuring the honey-voiced Tiombe Lockhart are among the top highlights; "I Got You" is the best of that lot, with Lockhart, horns, organ, electric piano, and guitar slinking and winding around one of Waajeed's crisply snapping beats. A collaboration with the Sa-Ra crew, "Deep Inside," is ...
| | holly down Next Perfect Thing CD (2004)
One Of A Kind album
$12.65 "Show me something new, I've got 1,000 other records to play." This sentiment captures the core of down holly's latest release: Something new and satisfying to drag a listener into the CD from the first note -- and keep them there. Entitled "Next Perfect Thing," the new CD is a radical hi-fi departure from the band's lo-fi beginnings. What started as an acoustic project matured into the music that helped define the DC-Metro power pop/rock scene. Along the way, acoustic guitars gave way to electric ones, and the simplicity of an unplugged duo was updated with the sonic textures of a full-on rock outfit. The sound: a balance of power pop and melodic alternative rock. The album frames the band's distinctive lyrics with an amalgam of musical inputs. The method: Take plenty of big guitars to satisfy modern rock fans; bind them to melodic, convincingly-delivered vocals; add a measured yet flexible rhythm corps; and filter it through catchy and clever songwriting. ...
