Brian Eno, after discovering Laraaji's mastery of the zither, was enamored enough with him to offer Laraaji the second chapter in his 1970s ambient series. Actually, as transcendent as Laraaji's compositions are, they also represent the most "active" music of the series' four volumes. The three-part "Dance," consisting mainly of variations on Laraaji's ringing tones, processed, looped and played out, exhibits a certain spikiness that hardly defines it (at least from Eno's strict dictum) as 'ambient.'
However, Laraaji's approach is such that he knows how to participate at the extremes of both poles. The two-part "Meditation" is a gorgeous piece of neoprene ambience, Laraaji's zither stretched so the tones seem suspended in mid-air, glistening under cool draughts of moonlight. Beautifully composed and executed, the charms of DAY OF RADIANCE seep further into the subconscious with repeated exposure. Ambient 3: Day Of Radiance album
$13.95 David Byrne's first solo project--not counting his collaboration with Brian Eno, MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS--is a score for a ballet by Twyla Tharp which was commissioned in an unusual way. Tharp gave Byrne a tape of edits of existing music, which the troupe had been using in initial rehearsals, and told him to write new music which matched the length, tempo, and mood of what was on the tape.
As a result, THE CATHERINE WHEEL has an odd, occasionally disjointed effect, with short segues and instrumental interludes appearing between ...

Ambient 3: Day Of Radiance songs
$10.85 A collection of Andean works on the Narada label. Some of the more traditional outfits in the genre are present, as are a few of the more progressive ones. The album starts out with one of the better ensembles around, Savia Andina; providing one of their better known numbers "Tempestad." It then moves through numbers by Alturas (a US-based cultural outfit), Viento de los Andes (an Ecuadorian traditional group), and Echoes of Incas (a Northern-end Latin American group doing South American music). Rumillajta appears with some stunning work on strings and flutes to follow, and some more modern work from Inkuyo follows, with synthesizers added in for effect. Imbaya provides a violin-heavy piece with Na Yachanichu, and the rather lighter panpipe-based Inti-Illimani performs a nice number with only mild accompaniment. A higher paced number comes from the family outfit Andes Manta, and Inkuyo and Rumillajta return with one piece each; a lively string work from Inkuyo, and a much more relaxed ...
