Not many artists would be bold enough to spend their limbo time between labels rethinking and reworking tracks produced by a legend like Maurice White, but Paul Taylor made the right decision refining four tracks on Undercover with the studio help of Russ Freeman. Redoing the entire sax melody and groove pattern on "Movin' On," Taylor engages in a dramatic mood swing halfway through the song, moving from a laid-back shuffle vibe to a swinging, percussive alto over an insistent, electronic high-hat sound; Freeman's electric guitar adds a subtle emotional emphasis. While Taylor's last album, Pleasure Seeker, featured loads of attractive trip-hop atmosphere along with synth and percussion effects, sparseness is the buzzword this time. On "Ariel," his silky soprano makes a potent melodic statement that stands out far ahead in the mix from the barely audible, floating atmospheres, the hypnotic synth-bell pattern, and the water-drop percussion effects. Dino Esposito and Scott Rammer, who produced the last album, helm a few tunes here, but they don't overwhelm Taylor this time. A cover of Janet Jackson's "Velvet Rope," for instance, is trip-hoppy in overall vibe, but the electronic percussion merely pitter-patters gently behind Taylor's squealing soprano; Brian Monroney chimes in with a mournful steel string presence and synth vibes bubble in the distant background. ~ Jonathan Widran

Undercover album
$8.49 On his fourth album, Paul Taylor calls upon five different producers: Dino Esposito, Kurt Jackson, Mathew Edralin, Jeff Lorber, and Oji Pierce. The function of these musicians for the most part is to create largely synthesized backgrounds for the soprano saxophonist to solo over in his familiar, melodic manner. Esposito handles the title song and "Flight 808," the first two tracks; Jackson does "PT Cruiser" (with Edralin) and "Sunshine" (on which he sings some bland romantic lyrics); Lorber is responsible for "Tuesday Afternoon," "Pendulum," "Come Over," "Free Fall," and "Palisades"; and Pierce is behind the board for "Dream State" and "Summer Park." Real guitars and percussion are included in the mix here and there, but the sound of the background music remains relatively anonymous, its purpose to provide a rhythmic underpinning and a little color. What matters is the saxophone, or rather the sax harmonies and sax ...
| | Steve Cole Ny La CD (2003)
Undercover CD music
$9.09 Burgeoning smooth jazz superstar Steve Cole continues to bridge the gap between pop-jazz and classic R&B on his third studio album, NY LA. Featuring strong melodic statements and truly funky keyboards via the likes of Brian Culbertson and Marquis "Hami" Dair, NY LA is a moody and solid affair. From the disco-influenced "Off Broadway," which harkens back to the best work of the Crusaders, to the Donald Byrd-esque "Interlude IV," tenor saxophonist Cole deftly crosses the boundary from jazz soloist to R&B heavyweight. More Grover Washington, Jr. than Kenny G., Cole manages to keep things organic and simple -- despite the use of programmed drum beats and synthesizers -- a lesson some of his contemporaries could learn. Also adding depth are the vocal tracks ...

| | Michael Lington Everything Must Change CD (2002)
Undercover songs
$12.49 Some bop snobs would have listeners believe that smooth jazz is inherently evil because it is designed to attract R&B and pop audiences -- that commercialism is a place where only infidels, heretics, and blasphemers dwell. But truth be told, smooth jazz is what the artist chooses to make it; some pop-friendly jazz (Grover Washington, Jr., David Sanborn, Pat Metheny) has been quite creative. Unfortunately, a lot of radio-oriented smooth jazz tends to be contrived and formulaic, and more often than not, Michael Lington's Everything Must Change is a perfect example of an artist modeling himself after what NAC radio is playing instead of gambling with inspiration. The problem with much of this CD isn't the fact that Lington has been influenced by urban contemporary, funk, and pop -- contrary to the assertions of bop snobs, there is no reason why jazz shouldn't be combined with a variety of different things. Nor is Lington's problem a lack of chops; he's a capable saxophonist who knows his way around both the alto and the soprano. The problem with most of Everything Must Change is a lack of spontaneity ...
| | Paul Taylor Steppin' Out CD (2003)
Undercover album
$6.89 Paul Taylor, the sexy saxman of smooth/urban jazz, is back with his fifth solo recording titled Steppin' Out, his second outing on the Peak Records label. Ripe with old-school moods and pop-oriented flavors, Taylor's accompanists bring out the best of his smooth sax work on soprano and alto, his sax harmonies, and his vocoder on three tracks. Produced by Rex Rideout and Barry J. Eastmond, two of smooth/urban jazz's most acclaimed producers, the set jumps off with the radio-friendly single "On the Move," which immediately sets the tone for the remainder of the all-star project. The lovely, reassuring vocals of Sharon Youngblood are both soothing and captivating on "Someone Watching Over You." She provides an excellent foil for the beautiful soprano sax voice of Taylor, who provides delicate background complements. On "Enchanted Garden," Taylor plays a highly imaginative soprano sax and vocoder and ...
