Audio Mixer: Phil Magnotti. Recording information: Carriage House, Stamford, CT (1997); Carriage House, Stanford, CT (1997). Photographer: Frank Ockenfels. Sergio Salvatore has the odd fortune of resembling child actor Fred Savage from TV's "The Wonder Years, " and that could have plagued the public's openmindedness towards taking him seriously as a major jazz talent, rather than just a cute novelty. Fortunately, deep talent has won out and the prodigy, now a teenager, has bloomed into a multi-faceted composer/performer. A true product of the 90's, he not only named his shift towards contemporary pop/funk oriented jazz after an internet term (Point of Presence being the point from which one leaps onto the world wide web), but he's sharp enough to figure out that he's bound to gain a larger audience by stretching beyond his straight ahead beginnings. Guitarist Chuck Loeb is the perfect producer to bring out Salvatore's more pop-rock oriented leanings, which find Salvatore's lovely piano more along the lines of David Benoit than Chick Corea. Though jams like "Out of Nowhere" hold up the best in terms of artistic challenge, "So You Said," a cool ballad featuring Michael Brecker is Salvatore's very appealing entry into smooth jazzdom. And yet, happily, Salvatore doesn't forget his jazz chops, or their roots - he employs John Patitucci's shuffling acoustic basslines to complement some of his best ivory work on "Norwegian Wood" and a poignant original, "Antonio J." No longer just a great jazz prodigy, Salvatore seems poised here for great crossover acceptance. ~ Jonathan Widran

| | Wods-FM's 10th Anniversary: Best Of The 70S CDs (1997)
Point Of Presence
$13.29 Tony Orlando & Dawn,Grass Roots,Three Dog Night
Full Title: WOGL-FM's 10th Anniversary: Best Of The 70's. Contains 24 tracks. Contains 24 tracks. Personnel: Harry Nilsson (vocals). Liner Note Author: Mark Marymont. WOGL Oldies 98 presents the 10th Anniversary Edition, Vol. 3: Best of the 70's collects 24 classic rock & roll and pop-rock tracks that are perennial favorites on the Philadelphia radio station, including the Carpenters' "Close to You," Diana Ross' "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," Tom Jones' "She's a Lady," Tony Orlando & Dawn's "Knock Three Times," Meatloaf's "Two out of Three Ain't Bad," Vicki Sue Robinson's "Turn the Beat Around," Grass Roots' "Temptation Eyes," Gladys Knight & Pips' "Midnight Train to Georgia," Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World" and Don McLean's "American Pie." It's a solid but unexceptional oldies collection that should please casual fans; more dedicated collectors will find its predictable song selection a little frustrating and the disc a little unnecessary. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine This 21-track compilation is both foolproof and utterly predictable. There are certain songs that seem to turn up over and over on compilations (they must be available for licensing cheap), songs like KC & the Sunshine Band's "That's the Way I Like It," Pilot's "Magic," Rod Stewart's "Maggie May," Looking Glass' "Brandy," and the Hollies' "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress." Of course, they're all here. But these are all dependable hits, the kind that you hear continually on oldies radio: 17 out of 21 were gold or platinum records, and 14 hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. They tend to mark significant events in their creators' careers: seven were the artists' first hits; 12 were the biggest hits they ever had. Neil Sedaka's "Laughter in the Rain" was his first chart entry in almost nine years, sparking his '70s comeback. The musical styles range from Don McLean's singer/songwriter epic "American Pie" to Vicki Sue Robinson's disco standard "Turn the Beat Around," with plenty of pure pop in between, much of it by one-hit ...

| | Joan Baez Original Master Series Vol. 2 CD (1961) Remastered
Point Of Presence
$15.35 The 2001 remastered edition of Joan Baez's second LP features 3 bonus tracks and new cover art as well as a replica of the original cover and liner notes. Personnel: Joan Baez (vocals, guitar); The Greenbriar Boys. Producer: Maynard Solomon. Reissue producer: Mark Spector. Originally released on Vanguard (2097). Includes original liner notes by Nat Hentoff and reissue liner notes by Arthur Levy. Digitally remastered by Jeff Zaraya. This is part of Vanguard's Original Master series. Joan Baez's second album, recorded when she was 20 years old, is a hearty helping of folk masterpieces that give ample evidence to exactly how she was established as a leader of the contemporary folk scene of the day. The material chosen is truly exceptional, from the beautifully stark British ballad "The Trees They Do Grow High" to the tragic tales of death and lost love in "Engine 143" and "Banks of the Ohio," which recall the Carter Family in presentation as much as spirit. Without a doubt, Baez's version of "Pal of Mine" is every bit as vibrant as when the Carters recorded it, though here given a more bluegrass sound by the banjo and backup vocal accompaniment of the Greenbriar Boys. The traditional Christmas tune "The Cherry Tree Carol" is presented perfectly by Baez's gorgeous arrangement. Baez is a true master of ...
| | Bubble Puppy Gathering Of Promises CD (1969) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Point Of Presence
$9.69 1969 Reissue From This Texas Psychedelic Band.
Bubble Puppy: Rod Prince (vocals, guitar); Todd Potter (guitar); Roy Cox (bass); Clayton Pulley (drums). Personnel: Rod Prince (vocals). Audio Remasterer: Greg Russo. Liner Note Author: Greg Russo. Recording information: International Artists Recording Studios (1969). Short-lived Texas psychedelic rockers Bubble Puppy stuck around long enough for only one album, but A GATHERING OF PROMISES is a fine legacy. It contains the band's signature single, "Hot Smoke and Sasafrass," which actually hit the Top 40 at the time, and it shows Bubble Puppy to have been heavily influenced by West Coast contemporaries like Moby Grape, mixing three-part harmonies and solid songcraft with a tasty dash of fuzz-guitar frenzy. Recording for International Artists Records, the crazed Texas label that brought the world such acid-damaged visionaries as the 13th Floor Elevators, the Red Krayola, Lost & Found, and Electric Rubayyat, the Bubble Puppy seemed by comparison to be a beacon of semisanity -- a rather ...
