| | Long Ryders Native Sons CD Long Ryders Discography of CDs
The Long Ryders' 1984 full-length debut is one of the defining albums of the mid-'80s roots-rock scene, a loose amalgamation of bands reacting against the MTV-ready crop of synth-pop superstars by playing guitar-heavy country-influenced rock and roll. Heavily influenced by Gram Parsons and the Buffalo Springfield, singer/songwriter Sid Griffin and crew mix the '60s revivalism of the then-current Paisley Underground scene with a fondness for mandolins and other bluegrass instruments which would be further explored by the alt-country groups of the '90s. Unfortunately, the Long Ryders, who had made much of their "authenticity" in early interviews, blew their street cred in 1985 by starring in a beer commercial, to widespread derision. NATIVE SONS proves that the band deserved a much better fate than that.
Native Sons was the first full-length album by the Long Ryders and the one that established their eclectic mixture of Byrds/Clash/Flying Burrito Brothers' influences. 1984 release. Frontier.
Recorded in 1984.
The Long Ryders: Stephen McCarthy (vocals, various instruments); Sid Griffin (guitar, autoharp, harmonica, background vocals); Tom Stevens (bass, background vocals); Greg Sowders (drums, percussion).

$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.

Native Sons album
$9.29 The first album to be launched by Starbucks-sponsored Hear Music series, FROM THE GROUND UP is the mainstream debut by the all-female pop-rock outfit Antigone Rising. The band's proper studio debut, DRAMA CLUB, was reputedly ready for release at the time the band inked the Starbucks deal, but FROM THE GROUND UP, a live-in-the-studio recording of acoustic numbers, gave the public the jump on the group's earnest, accessible folk-tinged pop, a sound that puts Antigone Rising on the same trajectory for commercial success as Sheryl Crow, the Indigo Girls, and Alanis Morrissette.
Antigone Rising seemed to, well, rise out of nowhere in the early days of 2005, appearing on VH1 regularly and receiving the honor of being the first new artist given an entry in Starbucks' Hear Music series. Of course, this sudden omnipresence didn't happen overnight. The group had been kicking around since the late '90s, appearing on some shows on the 1998 Lilith Fair tour, and releasing a bunch of self-released records before signing with Lava in 2004. The band had a studio debut, provisionally titled Drama Club, all set to go in 2005 -- as of the first week of May, their bio on their official site concerned the release of Drama Club, which was nowhere on the release schedule at that point -- when the Hear Music deal materialized and the powers that be decided that launching Antigone Rising via a Starbucks-sponsored release was a better move than dumping the major-label debut onto the market. Frankly, it was a smart move, because that Hear Music release, From the Ground Up, is the kind of adult alternative pop that was all the rage in the late '90s and what the Starbucks demographic was likely craving: tasteful, earnest, ambitious, singer/songwriter-oriented alternative folk-pop, equal parts Indigo Girls, Alanis Morissette, and Natalie Merchant, with a touch of the sassy spunk of a Sheryl Crow or a Shelby Lynne. By all accounts, Antigone Rising rocks harder in its other material -- both in concert and on record -- but this live-in-the-studio, acoustic-based set of material (comprised of both newer and older songs), showcases the band's ...
