Hailing from the northern California town of Davis, Thin White Rope was initially pegged as a proponent of the paisley underground movement. Such labeling, however, tells half the story at best. The list of bands the group went on to cover over the course of their ten-year career is actually more revealing. Songs by Suicide, the Stooges, Lee Hazlewood, Marty Robbins, Bob Dylan, Can, and a James Bond theme have all been rendered by the band in the studio and on-stage. That list goes a long way in explaining the mixture of raw, angular riffs, southern twang, and icy psychedelia that characterizes Exploring the Axis, the group's 1985 debut. What it does not convey, perhaps, is the relative bleakness of Thin White Rope's music. Frontman Guy Kyser, guitarist Roger Kunkel, bassist Stephen Tesluk, and drummer Jozef Becker outline a series of barren landscapes, their instruments kicking up clouds of dust from the parched earth like a rollicking, rickety ghost-train headed south. At times Jeff Eyrich's productions approach the wintry heir of Martin Hannett's work with Joy Division. This climate is ideal for Kyser, who delivers tales of isolation, allusion, and death; his voice a perpetually unsteady quake. Unfortunately, he hadn't yet learned how to pace himself, continually reaching for the drama inherent in the songs at the expense of lyrical nuances. Though subsequent releases would see a maturing of the band's sound, Exploring the Axis would remain the blueprint. ~ Nathan Bush

Thin White Rope: Stephen Tesluk (vocals, guitar, bass); Guy Kyser, Roger Kunkel (vocals, guitar); Jozef Becker (drums).

1985 was punk dead? i don't know. but i do know that you are already ahead of your peers, not that it matters. this is the concept of drugstore cowboy+X(john doe etc.) +the doors in the desert.....? it may have to grow on you, but there are rewards in waiting. please buy it with open ears

The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted. The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ish whisper and his thoroughly downcast lyrics, which cast him squarely in the Mark Eitzel/Smog ...

This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness. Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. ...

As this is the originals Queers lineup -- Wimpy, Tulu, and Joe Queer -- you know what to expect: short, sharp, raspy punk rock that sounds a lot like the early-'80s Angry Samoans or sped-up, first-LP Ramones, with throwback comic-offensive lyrics. Like South Park times ten, it's juvenile -- funny if you have a high threshold ...

Shout Factory's Magic Moments: The Best of '50s Pop isn't a flashy box set -- apart from an introduction from Billy Vera, there's little in the way of liner notes, nor does it boast any rare or unexpected material. But that's it's charm. ...

Mary Onettes
Mary Onettes CD  (2007) (Import) Sweden

Exploring The Axis
CD $11.85
The Mary Onettes' eponymous debut sounds eerily familiar -- there's the synthiness and jumpy new wave basslines of Echo & the Bunnymen ("Void" is a good example) and just a touch of jangly R.E.M. guitar work ("Pleasure Songs"). In this respect, the Mary Onettes could be lumped in with other Scandinavian shoegaze worshippers, and those familiar with Swedish indie pop will no doubt reach for comparisons to bands like Lane and Celestial. All of this sounds great on paper, and to be honest the album itself sounds pretty darn good at first. "Pleasure Songs" does a great job of blending their jangly alt-rockiness with their shoegaziness, and for all its familiarity it sounds quite fresh. Sadly, the remainder of the album relies on nondescript, by-the-book synth-pop fare, and the album suffers as a result. The Mary Onettes are literally consumed by their influences, and there's little to distinguish them from the Bunnymen. Now, relying on an array of tried-and-true shoegaze clichés does not a bad record ...

All songs written or co-written by Lionel Richie, except "Old Fashion Love" (Milan Williams), "Lady (You Bring Me Up)" (William King/Shirley King/Harold Hudson), "Nightshift" (Walter Orange/Dennis Lambert/Franne Golde) and "Goin' To The Bank" (Dennis Lambert/A. Goldmark/Franne Golde). Contains new versions of Commodores hit songs re-recorded by the 1992 Commodores line-up. Later compilations have made this obsolete, but it's still a good, no-nonsense, nuts-and-bolts ten-song compilation. It begins with the upbeat, harmonic "Flying High," which is almost guaranteed to pull anyone out of the doldrums. Three of Lionel Richie's ...
