After the regressive, low-key Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star, Sonic Youth appeared to be floundering somewhat, but Washing Machine erased any notion that the band had run out of things to say. Easily their most adventurous, challenging, and best record since Daydream Nation, the album finds Sonic Youth returning to the fearless exploration of their SST records, but the group has found a way to work that into tighter song structures. Not only are the songs more immediate than most of the material on their earlier records, the sound here is warm and open, making Washing Machine their most mature and welcoming record to date. It's not a commercial record, nor is it a pop record, but Washing Machine encompasses everything that made Sonic Youth innovators, and shows that they can continue to grow, finding new paths inside their signature sound. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
WASHING MACHINE returns Sonic Youth to the ringing electric guitars, clever songwriting and multi-layered arrangements that are the band's calling card. Not the casual acoustic sigh of its predecessor, EXPERIMENTAL JET SET, TRASH AND NO STAR, WASHING MACHINE's electricity gives Sonic Youth new life.
With its sprawling guitar noise, "The Diamond Sea" recalls the GOO-era "Mote," proving that the crunching metallic waves that once made Sonic Youth so impressive are back. "Junkie's Promise" trembles with distortion and shimmering melodic phrases, while "Saucer-Like" brings the band's clamoring two-guitar dynamic back into focus. This is the band's triumph--their sound is easier to digest, and invites the listeners to re-examine their strengths.
WASHING MACHINE is also a return to form in terms of songwriting. "Panty Lies" continues Kim Gordon's hipster manifesto series, giving us another glimpse of the world from her perspective--"oh how rude," she sneers, "at least I got your attention, square." "Skip Tracer" hints at Sonic Youth's position as baby-sitters for the next generation of alternative rockers, but isn't condescending. In fact, it's one of the best moments on the album. A description of a singer "shouting the poetic truths of high school journal takers" exemplifies the age gap between Sonic Youth and the new generation, but it doesn't alienate them. It's just such awareness that makes WASHING MACHINE work. Sonic Youth's respect for the scene they helped create will forever keep them on top of the indie heap.Rolling Stone (10/19/95, p.148) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...a sardonic, wise-ass, indulgent, and totally captivating album..."
Spin (12/95, pp.118-119) - 6 (out of 10) - "...their patented brand of scrappy avant-rock [is] simultaneously ahead of and behind the curve..."
Entertainment Weekly (12/29/95-1/5/96, p.132) - Ranked #7 on EW's Top 10 Albums Of 1995.
Entertainment Weekly (9/29/95, p.61) - "...these songs unfold over even-tempered rhythms and guitars that linger rather than attack. A splatter of distortion may enter, but the effect is mostly languid and wonderfully hypnotic..." - Rating: A-
Melody Maker (10/7/95, p.41) - "...it's the sound of a band coming up with new noises....lovely for its delicate guitars and reflective, loose-laid ways, its tantalising hints of humankindness....10 tracks without a bad one..."
Village Voice (2/20/96) - Ranked #18 in Village Voice's 1995 Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll.
NME (Magazine) (12/23-30/95, pp.22-23) - Ranked #31 in NME's `Top 50 Albums Of the Year' for 1995.
NME (Magazine) (9/30/95, p.53) - 8 (out of 10) - "...it flows and has an uncompromising edge you'd hardly expect after all this time--a sense of chances taken, of instruments being swapped, of playfulness as well as seriousness....`The Diamond Sea'...is probably the best song Sonic Youth have ever written..."

5 stars brilliant
Another timeless masterpiece highly evolved from their previous works, totally inspired by the anti-maintstream praised "Experimental Trash", and much more developed into that context where each musicians are involved, where the creativity and in each track is remarkable and still showing that Sonic Youth are the best at experimental music.

With Their New Face On

This edition of WITH THEIR NEW FACE ON includes an Enhanced bonus disc containing a 1967 documentary about the Spencer Davis Group.

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Personnel: Spencer Davis (vocals, guitar); Ray Fenwick (guitar); Eddie Hardin (keyboards); Pete York (drums).
Though named Time Seller [Special Edition], this is actually something like an expanded edition of the band's first post-Stevie Winwood album, With Their New Face On. The first disc of this two-CD set consists wholly of With Their New Face On, a not-bad record that nonetheless could not come close to matching the best of what the band had recorded with Winwood in the group, no matter how much some collectors might want to put a different face on that situation. The album veered from fairly decent pop-psychedelia ("With Their New Face On" itself) and rather Traffic-sounding cuts ("Mr. Second Class") to solid blues-rock ("Don't Want You No More," covered by the Allman Brothers) and mundane filler in the same mold. This particular reissue is perhaps more notable for the second disc, a CD-ROM consisting of a 56-minute 1967 documentary film on the group, at the time when the lineup included singer/guitarist Phil Sawyer (who had left the band by the time With Their New Face On came out) and organist Eddie Hardin as replacements for Stevie Winwood and Muff Winwood. There are factors that work against the film being a major enjoyable experience, aside from needing to view the whole thing on your computer screen. Though all the dialogue is in English, the commentary is in German and not subtitled in English (though, conversely, some of the spoken dialogue appears with German ...
