| Avalon Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Plucky Pearl-essence This CD has all of the energy one hears at Pearl Django live performances, and adds the advantage of the subtlties often lost at live venues.
They do Old Reinhardt proud, and it is a pleasure to hear this music being presented to a new generation of "Metro" Swing fans, as well as to newcomers to the form. These guys are hot, tight, polished, and very true to the Django style.

Amazing musicianship This five piece, (with occasional guests), band plays fun, but serious music, about half of which is composed by Django Reinhardt. The music has a jazzy-swing sound. Incredible musicians, great acoustic and hollow body Epiphone guitar. Submitted by a reviewer (Port Orchard, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Johnny Frigo I Love John Frigo...He Swings CD (1957) Remastered; Digipak
Avalon
$9.89 Johnny Frigo spent most of his professional life as a jazz bassist, but in the mid-'80s he picked up his first instrument, the violin, and started what amounted to a second jazz career on that instrument. Frigo biographies frequently refer to an obscure album release from the 1950s that prefigured this change, and this is it, a session Frigo recorded in 1957 at Universal Recording Studios in Chicago for Mercury Records. Joined by guitarist Herb Ellis (Frigo and Ellis had previously worked together in the Soft Winds Trio with pianist Lou Carter), Norm Jeffries on drums, Dick Marx on piano, Cy Touff on trumpet, and the great ...

Avalon
$14.59 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Vikter Duplaix.
Though his name isn't familiar to most electronica listeners, Vikter Duplaix earned a volume in !K7's epic mix series DJ-Kicks thanks to an impressive, rangy credit list -- artists from Jazzanova to Erykah Badu to MC Dynamite to Jermaine Dupri. For his own feature (the first under his own name), Duplaix fashioned a house mix ranging far and wide for tracks that probably wouldn't have made much sense out of this setting. Duplaix's style isn't that of a traditional house DJ; he's actually more of a selector, choosing tracks he likes and ones that work well together, but never worrying about beat-matching or blending tracks into each other. After a spoken word opener from his own Critical Point project, ...

Legends & Lions: Swingin' is one of a pair of specially priced compilations simultaneously released by Mack Avenue at a special price to showcase their artists. Unlike typical collections, this CD combines previously issued tracks and music from future projects along with one unissued track that evidently will not appear elsewhere. The selections range from the tasty uptempo blues "Mighty Burner," which showcases trumpeter Rashawn Ross extensively before tenor saxophonist ...

Avalon
$13.69 Through two years performing the bluesy tunes of powerhouses like Susan Tedeschi, Sue Foley, and Debbie Davies, the Mud Angels steadily added originals to their set until an album shaped up. The record includes 12 original tunes with a variety of styles that is unusually wide for a blues-based album. The record traverses many moods, from slow and sexy to urgent and rocking, and many topics, from sweet devotion and tasty summer fruit to soured love and bitter politics. The album’s vocal and guitar melodies, performed by front woman Laura "Torch" England and lead guitarist Kenny Cobb, span an equally impressive range in tone, emotion and intensity. The Mud Angels have been highlighting the rocking side of blues since early 2005. Nominated for three awards in the 2007 Madison Area Music Awards competition (Female Vocalist of the Year, Blues Song of the Year and Blues Artist of the Year), the Mud Angels’ "blues on fire" sound is created by Laura “Torch” England on vocals, Kenny Cobb and Jackson on guitars, Mike Burden on bass and Andy Mosey on drums. With a name like the Mud Angels, you might think water is their main element, but fire is more likely - their live performance has been described as "blazing", "incendiary", and "steamy." The Mud Angels include five musicians with notable and varied musical stories. The Mud Angels’ tight rhythms come from the band’s core -- drummer Andy Mosey, bass guitarist Mike Burden and guitarist Jackson -- who have been playing together in various forums for more than 10 years. They recruited singer England to front the band in the spring of 2005 and lead guitarist Cobb in the fall of 2006 to complete their guitar-driven blues rock sound. With a passion for singing that she learned at a young age, England has found a real musical home in blues and blues rock. Born and raised in North Carolina, England comes by her soulful tone naturally though it wasn’t until recent years that she began singing the blues. From age 12 to 20, she performed classical chamber music with award-winning and internationally-touring choirs and directed a pop-rock a cappella group in college. After graduating and pursuing a career in environmental conservation, England’s main musical outlet was singing back-up harmonies for her twin sister, Kyler England, a professional and highly accomplished singer-songwriter now based in Los Angeles. It was truly a stroke of luck that the Mud Angels discovered England and connected her with a body of music that highlights the strength and style of her voice like no other genre. "The expressive and challenging melodies of the blues feel so natural -- it’s like this is where my voice belongs. Nothing feels better than belting out a Tedeschi tune," says England. And vocal ...
