Held annually in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Reggae Sunsplash is the world's largest reggae festival. This excellent CD offers a sampling of some of the 1982 Sunsplash's highlights and contains performances by big names like Toots & the Maytals, Mutabaruka, Yellowman, the Gladiators, the Mighty Diamonds and the Twinkle Brothers, all of whom are in good or excellent form. One thing The Best of Reggae Sunsplash shows is reggae's diversity -- Toots' exuberance ("Never Get Weary," "Beautiful Woman") is a long way from Mutabaruka's angry dub poetry ("Hard Times Love," "Drug Kulcha") and the dubwise of Yellowman ("Church in Session"), Brigadier Jerry ("Pain") and the quirky Eek-A-Mouse ("Neutron Bomb"/"Assassinator"). And on the Mighty Diamonds' "Right Time," one can hear why some admirers of classic African-American soul music also hold classic reggae in such high regard. This disc, released by a small and obscure label based in Silver Spring, MD, may be hard to find but would be well worth the search. ~ Alex Henderson

Orgy's first album was industrial-inflected synth rock of the Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson variety--a non-stop assault of pounding drums, jackhammer guitars, and buzzing synths, all heavily processed. This sophomore effort is essentially more of the same, albeit with comic book sci-fi pretensions and a dollop of old-fashioned psychedelia added to the mix.

Released only months after RAMONES, the Ramones' second album pales slightly in comparison to its stone-classic predecessor--but only slightly. LEAVE HOME contains enough all-time Ramones anthems--"Commando," "Pinhead" (which introduces the legendary "Gabba Gabba Hey" chant), and "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment," to name only three--that it's still an essential document of the New York punk scene. Rhino's remastered 2001 reissue restores the original running order of the album, including "Carbona Not Glue," which was hastily removed from the 1977 vinyl not because it advocated dangerous activities but because the manufacturers of the spot remover Carbona objected.

The third of the Ramones' original quartet of albums, 1977's ROCKET TO RUSSIA is actually a big improvement over the slightly disappointing LEAVE HOME, released earlier in 1977. While not as solidly perfect as RAMONES, ROCKET TO RUSSIA contains very little fat and boasts possibly the finest songs in the band's entire repertoire, "Rockaway Beach" and the immortal "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker."
