This is a well-crafted album from longtime studio ace Louie Shelton. As the title suggests, the emphasis is on Shelton's guitar work, and this man can play. Though obviously tailored for the contemporary/smooth jazz market, Guitar has much more oomph than is typical in this genre. The arrangements are tight and consistently hold the listener's attention with a variety of textures and rhythms, and the guitarist displays dazzling technique across a broad stylistic range. He plays octaves à la Wes Montgomery and single-note runs that put most hot-shot rock guitarists to shame. This is a release with many treats in store for the connoisseur of instrumental pop/rock, groove jazz, contemporary jazz, and just plain great guitar playing. ~ Jim Newsom

Purchase Guitar CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Jeff Kashiwa Peace Of Mind CD (2004)
Guitar album
$12.39 Jeff Kashiwa has a fluent if generic style on soprano, alto, and tenor, which fits perfectly into the "feel good" smooth music that he performs on "Peace of Mind." The 11 selections clock in between 3:46 and 5:14 and were clearly recorded with hopes of getting maximum radio airplay. Kashiwa's rhythm section is effective if anonymous (despite the presence of Brian Bromberg on bass) with the focus being almost entirely on the leader's melodic playing. While the music is lightly grooving and mildly soulful and Kashiwa plays well, no surprises occur and this set never rises above the level of pleasant background music. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Walter Beasley For Her CD (2005)
Guitar CD music
$15.65 The title track of veteran saxman Walter Beasley's latest jaunt into funky, groovy, and super-sensuous territory -- and his debut on Heads Up International -- has a brilliant and amusing anecdote attached. When he started making the album, he had just started seeing a new special someone, so it made sense to call the album For Her (and sing "I would give my life for her" on the graceful, soprano-driven title track) as a tribute. Halfway through the recording process, however, he broke up with "her" -- but because this "her" inspired the emotional ups and downs of the rest of the project, he kept the title. First, Beasley really digs her (the bouncy, disco-fied jam "She's All That," produced with sizzle by Chuck Loeb). Then they're getting down to the throbbing "Coolness," and waking up to a gentle "Good Morning." Later, he's wistfully nostalgic (the seductive "Remember When") and needs a bit of "Grace" to get through the heartache before acknowledging, as soulfully as can be, that "Things Change." Aside from wonderful rhythmic diversity, strong as ever emotional playing, and solid production (including several tracks by Pieces of a Dream's James Lloyd), this disc is unique in smooth jazz for actually attempting to tell a story through music -- rather than just throwing together a fun hodgepodge of new tracks. Beasley doesn't get the festival dates and ink that some of the younger, supposedly hipper smooth saxmen get, but this disc proves he's still a lead player in the game. ~ Jonathan Widran
Personnel: Walter Beasley (vocals, saxophone); Ra-Deon Kirkland (vocals); Chuck Loeb, Tyronne Chase (guitar); James Lloyd, Phil Davis (keyboards); Martin Walters, Webster Roach (bass instrument).
| | Paul Brown City CD (2005)
Guitar music CDs
$11.69 In 2004, when longtime smooth jazz producer Paul Brown unleashed his more personal guitar artistry via his solo debut, Up Front, and its hit airplay track "24/7," he created an interesting future dilemma for himself: he might someday be competing for radio time and sales against some of the superstars he'd helped to the top. The oft-imitated but never equaled producer, composer, and arranger has been the primary architect of the genre's urban sound for close to 15 years, scoring over 40 number one airplay hits for genre stars like Boney James (who duets with Brown on "Old Friends" and the title track), Rick Braun, Peter White, Kirk Whalum, Euge Groove, Norman Brown, Patti Austin, Larry Carlton, and legendary labelmates Al Jarreau and, in a cool full-circle career twist, Brown's chief jazz guitar influence, George Benson. Opening with the quirky and infectious "Cosmic Monkey," which features wordless vocals by Jeffrey Osborne, Brown gets even looser and funkier on this brilliant follow-up, inviting you into a whole new type of grooving playground. It's refreshing to hear tunes in this genre that sound so organic and uncontrived; the strutting, jamming, and funk-drenched "Las Vegas," written with guitarist Chuck Loeb and featuring the blistering sax of Michael Paulo, was created specifically for a New Year's Eve gig he did in Sin City. The collection also features some immediately identifiable crowd-pleasers -- a moody, retro chill-flavored cover of Grover Washington, Jr.'s trademark classic "Winelight" -- and other tracks that draw on Brown's deeper rock, soul, and jazz influences. The gentle, bossa nova-flavored "Hello Again" will bring to mind the Benson influence, while the thumpin' and crunchin' "Jumpin' Uptown," featuring some of Brown's most intense guitar licks -- textured with cool chill effects -- is the guitarist's throwback to the classic "Bumpin' on Sunset" by another chief inspiration, the legendary Wes Montgomery. He also adds a blast of Tower of Power-
| | Nils Ready To Play CD (2007)
Guitar songs
$12.49 In smooth jazz, a number one radio hit is all it takes to turn an emerging talent into a bona fide genre star who gets all the best festival bookings. Raised on Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and lots of funk, Munich-born guitarist Nils was the big genre story in 2005, breaking through with the lively title track from his in-the-pocket debut, Pacific Coast Highway; the song was number one on the Radio & Records airplay chart for seven weeks and was dubbed the most played song in the format for the year. Inspired by this success, Nils offered no big surprises but still engaged his fans just as much on Ready to Play, a disc that kept his sleek, crisp electric axe front and center while further exploring his pop, jazz, and R&B-driven options. Almost as if it's a self-fulfilling prophecy, he titled the first single "Ready to Play," which was one of those immediately infectious, grooving, and percussive tracks that radio and listeners could gobble up. Also perfect for another drive down PCH are the sensual "Just Smile"; the dreamy and ambient wordless vocal-enhanced "Catnap" (which taps into a trippy electronica sound); the old-schoolin' funk of "Sunrise on Sunset"; and the hardest-grooving track of all, "Hi Five." Rather than rely on much machinery, Nils made a great decision to let the music reflect the seamless ensemble energy of his live performances. His whole touring band is featured: bassist Alex Al, keyboardist Leon Bisquera (who also plays Fender Rhodes), drummer Donnell Spencer, Jr., synth player and singer Clydene Jackson, and percussionist Oliver Brown. Other featured first-call sidemen include bassists Roberto Vally, Dwayne "Smitty" Smith, Reggie McBride, and keyboardist Larry Dunn. ~ Jonathan Widran
Nils last album, "Pacific Coast Highway" (BAJ #545), catapulted him into the upper echelon of the smooth jazz genre with two #1 hit singles, the title track and "Summer Nights." "Ready to Play" is his follow-up release which is sure to be a fixture at ra

| | Paul Brown White Sand CD (2007)
Guitar album
$11.25 Smooth jazz producer, arranger, and songwriter Paul Brown made the transition to recording artist with 2004's Up Front, which, like its successor, 2005's The City, was a Top Ten hit on the Contemporary Jazz chart. With a switch from GRP to Peak Records, Brown should continue his popular ways with his third solo album White Sand. He has enlisted more guests than usual this time, to the point that the disc is practically one of those "and friends" duets collections. Al Jarreau sings on "Make Me Feel So Good," Bobby Caldwell on a cover of "Mercy Mercy Mercy," and Lina on a cover of "I Say a Little Prayer." Among the star instrumentalists, Boney James is heard on "Ol' Skoolin'," David Benoit on "R 'n' B Bump," Euge Groove on "More or Less Paul," Rick Braun on "Mr. Cool," and saxophone newcomer Jessy J on the title track. The guests simply augment the contributions of the leader, however; Brown's guitar is a dominant instrument, and he has a vocal on a cover of "For What It's Worth." As the familiar titles indicate, he has taken inspiration from the '60s, but his rhythm tracks often have a current hip-hop sound, and the well-known lyrics and melodies will only serve to make the album more palatable for radio. Brown isn't interested in making any changes to smooth jazz except the occasional tweak to keep it sounding current, and this is another album that will please his own fans, and fans of the guest artists (whose discs were sometimes produced by him). ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Four80East En Route CD (2007)
Guitar CD music
$14.65 The line that separates jazz-electronica from "smooth jazz" (or, let's be honest, from plain old easy listening) can be a treacherously thin one. It's the line that separates Weather Report from, say, Spyro Gyra, and many artists drawn to that borderland end up becoming forever lost in the shifting sands of watered-down funk grooves and wind chimes. Four80East navigate the line pretty well, and if they occasionally stray onto the syrupy side, you get the feeling that they don't really care as long as the grooves are fun and the melodies are attractive -- which they really are, almost all the time. "Five by Five" opens the album on an interesting and funky note, and is quickly followed by the all too aptly titled "Noodle Soup," a tune that is perhaps just a bit too silky and a bit too infused with synthesized strings (and wind chimes). But "Double Down" generates a darker and edgier mood, and "Easy Come, Easy Go" flirts nicely with reggae. "Closer" is an example of a song that dances around the edges of goopiness -- the "ha ha hey hey" vocals are just kind of silly, though most of the other elements in that track are fairly engaging. En Route is a very pleasant listening experience overall, even if parts of it are more soothing than interesting. ~ Rick Anderson
Personnel: Rob DeBoer (guitar, keyboards, programming, background vocals); Jon Stewart (tenor saxophone); Bryden Baird (trumpet); Tony Grace (drums, percussion, programming); Divine Brown (background vocals).

| | Piano Red Flaming Hurricane CD (1999)
Guitar music CDs
$12.69 An 11 track album that's been sitting in the Ace (Jackson, MS version) vaults since the 1970s, this is classic Piano Red all the way. His good-time singing, rough and garbled though it may be, and his barrelhouse piano playing are both in fine form on this hitherto undocumented session. With a small rhythm section, the focus stays firmly on Red as he turns in re-cuts of "Dr. Feelgood," "The Right String, but the Wrong Yo Yo," Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll," "Corrina, Corrina," and a nice sampling of what must have been some set list favorites. The deepest blues on here is "Whiskey Man" aka "Ten Cent Shot," a splendid talking blues with nice, understated slide guitar from the unknown guitarist on this date. But in the main it's Red in high rockin' gear, a man who was truly ahead of his time. While not rivaling his early RCA sides, this session comes as a really nice surprise. ~ Cub Koda
never before released 11 track session by the legendary albino piano pounder from the mid-1970s & features a mix of Red's all-time classics & songs never otherwise recorded

| | Lucky Peterson Double Dealin' CD (2001)
Guitar songs
$10.65 As one of the most versatile players in blues, Lucky Peterson ranks among the best of the best. His first release for the Blue Thumb label, Double Dealin' showcases the artist on 12 great songs soaked in the sentiments and emotions that characterize the blues style. Peterson plays the lead guitar, the Hammond B3, and sings his gut-wrenching blue notes with a great band that includes Johnny Lee Schell on rhythm guitar, Jon Cleary on keyboards, Reggie McBride on bass guitar, Tony Braunagel on drums and Tamara Peterson on background vocals. The Texacali Horns back the personnel with exceptional clarity using a serious combination of brass techniques. Peterson's use of an emotionally direct style is also rapidly establishing him as a great storyteller. "When My Blood Runs Cold," "4 Little Boys," and "Remember the Day" are among the themes he deals with from an original perspective and are among the standouts of the hard blues intonations. This CD is reflective of the successful urban blues techniques used on his previous efforts in that it specifically captures the essence of both the "chitlin circuit" and the electric blues associated with the Chicago style without compromising the traditional aspects of the blues form. A welcome addition to any blues collection. ~ Paula Edelstein
