This Haitian worldbeat band is politically motivated. While the musicianship is lush and there is a real sense of theater about the songwriting and production here, there is a lack of communication toward the listener throughout. Even borrowing snippets, as they do on "Sevenlen/Sukiyaki (No More Excuses for the War)," from the hit musical Flower Drum Song, fails to bring the listener any closer to understanding just exactly what Boukman Eksperyans hopes to gain from Revolution. ~ Jana Pendragon

Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). It was big news in 1969 when former key members of the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and the Hollies--three of the finest bands of the '60s--splintered off to form their own trio. My new CD is called Many Ponies. I hope you'll enjoy it.The inspiration for the title song, and so, in a way for the whole album, was a painting of the same name by a wonderful artist, Cecilia Henle. The style is primitive, in the best sense of that word, and looks quite American Indian to me, and other-worldly, as well. It reminded me a lot of the Horse Nation Dance described in Black Elk Speaks. When the horse (t'shunka wakan) came to the Plains Indians, especially the Lakotas, it created a revolutionary change in their culture and ushered in a whole new way of doing things. Since that time, the horse has been symbolic of something new, something radically different, or revolutionary change. Horses brought a revolutionary change to my way of thinking, acting and being, too. But for the New to be born, the Old has to die. To become the person you will be, you have to let go of the person you've been. It's that simple. But it ain't easy. I know. See. Horses saved my life. I'd be a much different man if not for them, and I'm not sure you'd like him. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like him, myself.Horses taught me things that changed me.Taught me by the nature of their being. Made me a better man and a better person.If you know and love horses, too, if you've been touched by them, been inspired by their courage and nobility, if you've delighted in their company, felt a deep peace and 'at-home-ness' in their presence, then you know exactly what I'm talking about.
