Macho Man
$12.95 Amy (Henry's Dress),Alicia (Poundsign),Yoshi(Scenic Vermo
The Aislers Set: Amy Linton, Wyatt Cusik, Alicia Can Clen Hevvel, Yoshi Nakamoto. Unknown Contributor Roles: Yoshi Nakamoto; Wyatt Cusick. This group is essentially Amy Linton, the guitarist/drummer of the late Henry's Dress, an underground but well-liked San Francisco indie-pop act. Now on her own, she's fronting this group with members of three other Bay-area bands, though half this LP is just Linton solo. On the full-band tracks, the group claims loads of great British mod influences from the Who and Action, and further later-'60s American pop heroes. But what you hear is a woman who sounds uncannily like the Shirelles' Shirley Owens Alston singing lullabies that nicely seem at odds with the agitated, distorted but still jangly guitar sounds such 30-year-old blueprints don't mention. On the opening ...

| | Five Blind Boys Of Alabama Featuring Clarence Fountain Deep River CD (1992)
Macho Man
$10.05 Full performer name: The Five Blind Boys Of Alabama Featuring Clarence Fountain. Personnel: Five Blind Boys Of Alabama (vocals); Eric Gale (guitar); Jerry Peters (piano); Booker T. Jones (organ); James Jamerson, Jr. (bass); Ndugu Leon Chancler (drums); Brenda King (tambourine). Recorded at Record I Studios, Sherman Oaks, California on June 8-15, 1992. Includes liner notes by Ben Sandmel. Personnel: Eric Gale (guitar); Jerry Peters (piano); Booker T. Jones III (organ); Leon "Ndugu" Chancler (drums); Brenda King (tambourine). Recording information: Record I Studios, Sherman Oaks, CA. Photographer: Michael P. Smith. On their umpteenth release, the Five Blind Boys of Alabama mix some modern blues and R&B into their core gospel sound. The rhythm section, led by the organ of the legendary Booker T. Jones, keeps the accompaniment simple as the group soars through some traditional material ("Closer Walk with Thee," "Every Time I Feel the Spirit, "), a few originals by lead vocalist Clarence Fountain, and a transcendent version of Bob Dylan's "I Believe in You." ~ Jason Ankeny DEEP RIVER is an electrifying album by one of the leading exponents of traditional black gospel music. The Five Blind Boys are an updated incarnation of a long-standing Alabama quintet, now led by the impassioned vocals of Clarence Fountain. And though their music features zealous attempts to bring new recruits to Jesus, their amalgam of traditional and modern Gospel vocal styles will seem wondrous to even the most secular-minded listeners. Using their deep, rich harmonies, the Blind Boys show their hand at a variety of musical styles. There are tambourine-led spirituals ("Brother Moses"), the blues ("Reminiscing"), and classic R&B ("I've Got The Love Of Jesus"), with most tracks featuring the soulful articulate organ of Booker T. Jones. They even include a deeply textured, well-controlled rave-up version of Bob Dylan's "I Believe In You." ...
| | Kyle Cease One Dimple CD (2006) With DVD
Macho Man
$12.95 Kyle Cease's brand of humor is simultaneously defensive, harshly abrasive, and strangely cuddly, relying on a comedic balancing act that combines a stream-of-consciousness delivery with impeccable timing in a set that includes nostalgia, acute observational comedy, and a finely honed sense of the absurd. Standup comedian Kyle Cease became a hit with the nostalgic geek squad in early 2006 when his "Generation Nintendo" routine became the hot MP3/video to forward. Remembering the good old days when you'd have to blow into the cartridge to get Super Mario Brothers to play on your slowly dying, always buggy machine, "Generation Nintendo" is Cease's masterwork as it hilariously flows from two button controllers to how Sunny Delight tasted like a blend of orange juice and baby medicine. Cease makes another Sunny D analogy that's funny, gross, and not good for repeating in mixed company, and if you can't stand a little trash with your wit, you better steer clear. He may dip into scatological humor, but he doesn't use it as a crutch, and in the end he comes off as a cross between Dane Cook and Adam Sandler, just as hyper as the former and willing to get as obtuse as the latter. His "My Weird Jokes" is truly weird but it warrants repeat listenings and gets funnier with every return. The first couple tracks are clever as Cease talks about CD players counting up tracks -- watch your display, pretty cool -- and his whole set flows well, becoming looser and more rewarding as things progress. Cook fans, Sandler addicts, and anyone looking for a new irreverent ...
