Originally released as a 2-LP set, half live, half studio recordings.
When Cream released WHEELS OF FIRE, they had established themselves as the premier blues-rock band due to the success of their first two albums and the extraordinary chemistry between the band's members. As a result of this synergy, Cream also enjoyed a fiery live reputation. This double album represents both sides of Cream's musical personality. The first record is a studio job, where the band mixes originals with covers of Howlin' Wolf ("Sitting on Top of the World") and Albert King ("Born Under a Bad Sign"). The songs written by the band all contain unique touches. "As You Said" finds Jack Bruce swapping his bass for a cello, "Pressed Rat and Warthog" sounds like an English folk tale courtesy of Ginger Baker's clipped recitation and the inclusion of baroque horns, and the classic "White Room" overflows with waves of Eric Clapton's wah-wah-drenched guitar.
The second record was recorded over a four-day span at San Francisco's Winterland and Fillmore West. Extended versions of "Toad" and Willie Dixon's "Spoonful" demonstrate the band's intricate interplay, but most impressive is a blistering reading of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads," in which all three members seem to be soloing simultaneously in a jaw-dropping display of fury and bravado.
If Disraeli Gears was the album where Cream came into their own, its successor, Wheels of Fire, finds the trio in full fight, capturing every side of their multi-faceted personality, even hinting at the internal pressures that soon would tear the band asunder. A dense, unwieldy double album split into an LP of new studio material and an LP of live material, it's sprawling and scattered, at once awesome in its achievement and maddening in how it falls just short of greatness. It misses its goal not because one LP works and the other doesn't, but because both the live and studio sets suffer from strikingly similar flaws, deriving from the constant power struggle between the trio. Of the three, Ginger Baker comes up short, contributing the passable "Passing the Time" and "Those Were the Days," which are overshadowed by how he extends his solo drum showcase "Toad" to a numbing quarter of an hour and trips upon the Wind & the Willows whimsy of "Pressed Rat and Warthog," whose studied eccentricity pales next to Eric Clapton's nimble, eerily cheerful "Anyone for Tennis." In almost every regard, Wheels of Fire is a terrific showcase for Clapton as a guitarist, especially on the first side of the live album with "Crossroads," a mighty encapsulation of all of his strengths. Some of that is studio trickery, as producer Felix Pappalardi cut together the best bits of a winding improvisation to a tight four minutes, giving this track a relentless momentum that's exceptionally exciting, but there's no denying that Clapton is at a peak here, whether he's

The cream of Cream! This is Cream at their best! The album features the ultimate mix of jazz/blues/rock and lives up to the names that Cream made for themselves as 'fusion' and 'supergroup'. "White room" still boasts the best of Clapton's wah-wah playing and has the best blend of psychedelic lyrics with rock music ever (it beats Hendrix!). And then there's tracks like "Politician", "Sitting on top of the world", "Born under a bad sign", etc. The whole album is a masterpiece! After first hearing this album I wanted to become a bass player - and 16 years later I play the bass guitar, and still say that Jack Bruce was the ultimate bass player, and that this is the ultimate blues/jazz/rock fusion album of the 1960s. Still the best live performance ever - after 40 years! This 2 CD set has a studio side and a live side. The studio CD is above average 60's English Rock, and features hits such as "White Room", "Politician" and "Born Under a Bad Sign". The live set is what makes this worth buying. "Spoonful" and "Toad" are lengthy improvisations; "Spoonful" has brilliant bass/lead interplay, and "Toad" is easily one of the best drum solos in rock history. But "Crossroads" is the pinnacle of live rock music. Less than four minutes long, it features astounding jamming at breakneck speed by all three players. It is still hard to believe this is a live performance. And it has never been bettered. Ever. Submitted by Dan (East Bay, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
5 stars doesn't say enough "Crossroads" is by far the greatest rock song of all time, the fact that it is a life performance boggles the mind. Rediculously good. This album made me love music. Submitted by sean (WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Wheels Of Fire album
$10.79 The Meditations, one of reggae music's preeminent vocal harmony groups, produce a blend of tough roots rhythms and smooth, soulful vocals that made them among the most popular Jamaican groups of the 1970s. Building upon the impeccable standards they had set in the previous decade, NO MORE FRIEND, released in 1983, adds modernizing touches (courtesy of producer Linval Thompson), updating the group's sound for a new decade. Anchored by perhaps the tightest rhythm section in reggae, the Roots Radics band, the trio's vocals truly soar, creating an exuberant mix of sumptuous harmonies and thundering, dubby beats
At the time of No More Friend's release back in 1983, The Meditations referred to it as their dance album, although there's not a hint of the disco-fied rhythms so popular amongst the roots crowd of the day, never mind the harder hitting sounds emanating from the sound systems. In fact the title track, which kicks off the set with its soaring harmonies and breezy horns, conjures up the sumptuous sounds of the rocksteady age, while "Forcing Me" exposes rocksteady's own roots -- Motown soul, and here the trio's harmonies glisten. But still this is the Sixties' as seen through the prism of the Roots Radics, and so even at its most effervescent, Style Scott's beats still boom, as Errol "Flabba" Holt's heavy bass thrums along. On "Jack on Top," Holt's bass throb underpins the whole piece, which beautifully blends '70s roots and the trio's '60s soul vocal styling. From there Friend begins slipping ever deeper into roots territory and dub elements begin to feed through the numbers. "Book of History" ...
