Exotic, Middle East flavored sonic mosaics. A Prayer For The Soul Of Layla is an excellent soundtrack for vicarious travel. Exquisite vocal additions are made by Paula Cole, Hassan Hakmoun, Pedro Aznar (Pat Metheny Group) and Marie Afonso (Zap Mama). A Prayer For The Soul Of Layla comprises celestial themes of the desolate expanse; music of the starry sky and the midnight desert. ~ Tom Schulte Dark and sensual, A PRAYER FOR THE SOUL OF LAYLA is a trip into the Middle East with a knowledgeable guide, Jamshied Sharifi. The Iranian-American keyboardist was born in Kansas City and studied American jazz before turning his interests to the music he learned from his father. With A PRAYER FOR THE SOUL OF LAYLA, Sharifi creates a singular fusion of Arabesque themes with a contemporary New Age sound that results in a beautiful, provocative recording. Sharifi works magic to coax organic, natural sounds from his synthesizers, and has invited some stellar world fusion artists into the studio to flesh out his sound. Hassan Hakmoun contributes some unworldly vocalizing to the albums first track, "Tariqat," which also features his sintir, a three-stringed bass lute from West Africa. "Ammeh Kimia " is the recording's standout track, with pop superstar Paula Cole performing an expressive vocal wail that complements gorgeous bedouin harp playing. Impeccably produced, every nuance and note of the authentic instruments can be appreciated. This recording is perfect for headphone junkies, as the ornate instrumentation and resonant echoes sweep the listener into another world. | | Shirley Horn You Won't Forget Me CD (1991)
Prayer For The Soul Of Layla
$8.05 W/M.Davis,W.Marsalis & B.Marsalis
Personnel includes: Shirley Horn, Miles Davis, Buck Hill, Branford Marsalis, Toots Thielemans, Buster Williams, Billy Hart. With 1991's You Won't Forget Me, Shirley Horn's star continued to rise. While mostly ballads, this recording also includes swinging takes on "I Just Found Out About Love" and "Foolin' Myself." Toots Thielemans stars with his distinctive harmonica sound on "Beautiful Love" and "Soothe Me," and the unmistakable trumpet of Miles Davis weaves around Horn's vocal on the title track. The opening medley moves from the almost-whispered ballad "The Music That Makes Me Dance," to a funkily midtempo "Come Dance with Me." "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" is absolutely gorgeous, with Wynton Marsalis stepping in to trade phrases with Horn's voice. The music here is mostly taken at a very leisurely tempo, and the spare arrangements allow plenty of room for the music to breathe, proving that less is often more. The only complaint is that such spaciousness generates is a certain sameness to the material, but this is leavened by the guest appearances of Thielemans, Davis, the brothers Marsalis, and ...

Audio Mixer: Dave Baker . Liner Note Author: Ira Gitler. Recording information: Clinton Recording Studios, New York, NY (12/02/1997-12/05/1997). Illustrator: Miles Davis. Arranger: Shirley Horn. No thanks to the paucity of musical genius in the latter half of the 1990s, tribute albums to the departed just kept pouring forth, although in Shirley Horn's case, she was repaying an old personal debt to her subject. After all, it was Miles Davis who originally got Horn out of D.C. in 1960 as his opening act at the Village Vanguard and contributed his ...

| | Laura Pausini Io Canto CD (2006)
Prayer For The Soul Of Layla
$7.55 Personnel: Dado Parisini, Celso Valli (piano, keyboards); Alfredo Golino (drums). Laura Pausini, a multilingual Italian pop singer who won a Latin Grammy in 2005 for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, decided to record an album of cover songs when she returned to the studio to record her followup effort. This is a fairly standard practice for pop/rock artists, of course, especially in the wake of a mammoth success like the one Pausini experienced with Resta in Ascolto (released concurrently in Spanish as Escucha in the U.S.). Io Canto (likewise released concurrently in Spanish, as Yo Canto) is a somewhat unusual covers album, however, for it's comprised of Italian pop/rock songs from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s -- few, if any, of which will be familiar to listeners across the Atlantic. ...
