Recorded live at Auditorio RSI, Lugano, Switzerland on March 24, 1963. Includes liner notes by Norberto Gimelfarb and Paolo Keller.
LUGANO 1963 is a radio transcription released as part of TCB Records' SWISS RADIO DAYS series of live-jazz discs. The recording may not be as pristine-sounding as some of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's live discs from this era, like PARIS 1960 or 1966's IN JAPAN, but it's impossible to argue with the contents.
LUGANO 1963 was recorded with nearly the same sextet lineup that released the classic NIPPON SOUL album the same year: alto saxophonist Adderley, his cornetist brother Nat, reedsman Yusef Lateef, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes. The recording features a scorching take on NIPPON SOUL's classic "Work Song" alongside six other representative tracks from this era of Adderley's career. "Jive Samba" and "Bohemia after Dark" are particularly strong, with both brothers and Lateef blowing some remarkable solos over the tight rhythm section.
Digitally remastered by Antoine Ogay.
This is part of TCB's Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series.

Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series, Vol. 3: Lugano 1963 album
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection ...
| | Lee Morgan Sonic Boom CD (1967) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series, Vol. 3: Lugano 1963 CD music
$9.45 Sonic Boom was not released until 1979 and then remained in print only for a brief time before eventually being reissued years later. In addition to the great trumpeter Lee Morgan and a fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins), the well-rounded set is a bit special for it allows the often R&B-associated tenor David "Fathead" Newman an opportunity to stretch out in a more challenging setting than usual. Highlights include the funky "Fathead," the complex "Sneaky Pete," Morgan's lyricism on "I'll Never Be the Same," and the infectious rhythms on "Mumbo Jumbo." This is an undeservedly obscure session. ~ Scott Yanow
This is indeed a welcome curiosity. The 2003 version of Lee Morgan's Sonic Boom was recorded in 1967, was not released until 1979, and then was quickly deleted. When it was reissued on CD in the 1990s, it was only in print for a short time as well. While one might think the ...
