This live set, featuring two of the giants of tenor saxophone, is filled with great energy and excitement. Both Webster and Gordon sound inspired on this release, and pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Bo Stief, and drummer Ed Thigpen also play with great gusto. Gordon's sound (and soloing) is much more modern than Webster's. However, Webster's "old school" approach fits in nicely with these boppers, if only because his style shows that the roots of jazz are inherent in bebop.
Unfortunately, Webster doesn't play on the one ballad "Didn't We." Webster's ballad work can't be beat, and it's a shame that it isn't showcased here. Instead, we are treated to Gordon's fine tenor work on this number. All things considered, strong readings of songs such as "Some Other Blues" by John Coltrane and Ellington's "In A Mellow Tone" make this release sizzle.
This is part of TCB's Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series.
Recorded live in Baden, Switzerland in November 1972.
Personnel: Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Kenny Drew (piano); Bo Stief (bass); Ed Thigpen (drums).

Swiss Radio Days, Vol. 10: Baden 1972 album
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. ...

Swiss Radio Days, Vol. 10: Baden 1972 CD music
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," ...

Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. At two discs and 34 tracks, this is quite comprehensive for a band whose key lineup released only half a dozen albums. In addition to all the expected hits like "Light My Fire," "Hello I Love You," and "Roadhouse Blues," this compilation delves much deeper into the catalogue with fan favorites such as "Not To Touch the Earth" and "Wishful Sinful," as well as a handful of previously obscure rarities. Remastered and newly remixed by original engineer Bruce Botnick ...
