Duane Eubanks was in his late 20s when he made his recording debut as a leader with My Shining Hour, a hard bop/post-bop date that recalls early to mid-1960s Blue Note and unites the younger brother of Kevin and Robin Eubanks with trombonist Robin, alto saxophonist Antonio Hart, pianist Orrin Evans, Avishai Cohen and drummer Ralph Peterson. Although derivative and not overly original, the music is well executed and generally satisfying. As a trumpeter, Duane Eubanks favors a tone that falls somewhere between Miles Davis and Clifford Brown-influenced trumpeters like Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard. Eubanks swings plays passionately, but on some of the more introspective material, he almost sounds like he could be playing a flugelhorn. Though Eubanks' interpretations of "I Love You" and "Dear Old Stockholm" are competent, the CD's most memorable moments come when he embraces his own compositions. The melancholy "Lonelyism," the congenial "Can't Wait 'Til Dawn" and the moody "Clairvoyance" show Eubanks to be a thoughtful composer who doesn't simply write lines -- he writes melodies. Released by the Swiss TCB label, My Shining Hour reached North American stores as an import. ~ Alex Henderson

Elton John spent much of the '80s in a whirlwind of personal upheaval and his musical unevenness included working with lyricists besides Bernie Taupin (an unthinkable notion during their run at the top of the charts during the '70s). EJ went for a fresh start by auctioning off all the costumes and props that he'd become renowned for during his over-the-top live shows. Right before doing this, the flamboyant entertainer revisited the past one more time by recreating his greatest hits live using orchestral accompaniment.
The resulting LIVE IN AUSTRALIA found the John donning a powdered wig and 17th century garb to lead this ensemble, along with members of his regular touring band. Older material such as "Burn Down The Mission," "Madman Across The Water" and "Take Me To The Pilot" is particularly breathtaking as presented in all its symphonic splendor while more obscure numbers such as "Have Mercy On The Criminal" and "The Greatest Discovery" remain odd yet interesting choices. The oddest result of this album's release was that "Candle In The Wind" unexpectedly became a hit 14 years after its original release. A slightly rewritten version dedicated to the late Princess Diana repeated this trick a decade later.
-IMPORT In England, this has so far only been released as a limited, numbered (5,000) edition, in a 12 X 12 box with deluxe booklet and other goodies.
Since this 1987 release is the album that brought "Candle in the Wind" to the charts for the first time -- the song first released on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and the song that John later reworked as a tribute to Princess Diana -- it's easy to think of this as a fairly standard live ...

Saxman Lamb comes out like a lion - The Oregonian Review by marty Hughley, January 11, 2002From the time he began making a name for himself in the Portland music scene more than a decade ago, saxophonist Patrick Lamb-just out of Oregon Episcopal School, fresh-faced, earnest, and ambitious- has explored a variety of styles. He's worked on his straight-ahead jazz chops in quintets, jam sessions and the like. He's worked with contemporary jazz stars and blues veterans.The main direction of his career though, has been toward smooth jazz, which not only holds the best commercial prospects for a contemporary saxophonist but fits with Lamb's crowd-leaser musical personality. But that genre never seemed to spur Lamb to develop his artistic voice beyond the polishing of surfaces; even his gutsiest blowing could come across as facile (as eveidenced on "The Closer I Get," his album from about a year ago).But now out comes "Sunshine Alley," a bright, welcome sign that Lamb's decade of hard work and eclecticism have really paid off. Taking on the time-honored tradition of the organ trio, Lamb teams up with Hammond B3 player Louis Pain, best known for his work with Paul deLay's great blues band, and completes the circle alternately with Mel Brown or Jason Carter on drums. Steeped in the soul-jazz approach of the 1960's, this is music that proves you can be direct and accessible without ingratiating your way toward the lowest common denominator. And it takes advantage of the tonal warmth and openhearted phrasing at the same time that it pushes Lamb to dig a little deeper for the authentic expression.Friday's show ...

If you are a no-name artist releasing your first LP, it helps to make a record where two members of Luna, three ex-Feelies (Dean Wareham, Stanley Demeski, Brenda Sauter, Glenn Mercer), and Robert Quine (Voidoids, Lou Reed, Tom Waits) all play on it. And while you're at it, why not cover Johnny Thunders' "You Can't Put Your Arms Round a Memory" for good measure? You wanted to get the attention of your humble reviewer; you got it! And Danbury, CT's Guillorn doesn't squander it. This is one of those quiet, twinkling little pop records (they call it "interior rock," and hey, that's not bad!) where nothing is in any particular hurry. Bright, fuzzy, light, airy, and even a little cheery (but not too much so), this is a record made by someone who no doubt appreciates Nico's solo LPs and the very idea of Moe Tucker as much as the rest of us. But she also knows how to translate that into her own pretty pop, like the beguiling "Throne." The more country-inflected tunes don't work as well, even with their lyrics of "legendary cowboys," but with little organ moods and minor percussion always kept spare and the vocals always coming warmly from that sparkling background, ...
