| | Greg Klamt Fulcrum CD Greg Klamt Discography of CDs
Fulcrum, the debut recording of Greg Klamt, is a superlative assortment of space songs. The tracks incorporate the synthesized whispering of wind sounds and delicate tinkling of chimes as they merge with Greg's ethereal, digital harmonies. The compositions lead to an aural destination and have a sense of unity and structure lacking in many of the nebulous space musings on the market. Like his music, Greg's outstanding cover art leads us into the starry expanse of the universe. We hear a mystic music, the sound of things never known and are lifted into dreams. ~ MusD

| | John Coltrane Ballads CDs (1962) Bonus CD; Remastered; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Fulcrum music CDs
$15.95 This Deluxe Edition of BALLADS includes a bonus disc of previously unissued material.
McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums).
BALLADS (1962) finds John Coltrane's classic quartet (which includes bassist Jimmy Garrison, pianist McCoy Tyner, and drummer Elvin Jones) gathering force as a unit and turning their skills to a softer, warmer sound than is usually be found on the team's recordings from the time. Some critics accused Coltrane of capitulating to commercial pressures with this release, but that reaction overlooks the gorgeous performances on "You Don't Know What Love Is," "I Wish I Knew," and others. A beautiful album, and a great entry point for those who might otherwise find Coltrane's '60s work too abrasive.
During the early '60s, the contentious critical reaction to John Coltrane's music got so over-the-top that some reactionaries branded his work with Eric Dolphy as "anti-jazz." Having already recorded the exploratory AFRICA/BRASS and LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD, Coltrane went along with producer Bob Thiele's suggestion that he do an album of BALLADS to silence nay-sayers once and for all.
BALLADS, DUKE ELLINGTON & JOHN COLTRANE and JOHN COLTRANE AND JOHNNY HARTMAN for a triptych of "traditional" recordings, italicizing the saxophonist's ability to swing in a classic vein, while underscoring his sensitivity as a ballad player. He even managed to impress the moldy fig who penned the original liner notes to BALLADS.
From the gentle opening strains of "Say It (Over And Over Again)," the saxophonist imparts all the tender yearning and romantic empathy of a mature, compassionate adult. Given his predilection for technical complexities, Coltrane avoids any hint of emotional grandstanding, allowing only for subtle melodic embellishments. On "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "What's New" he displays a glorious tone, achieving a remarkably human vocal timbre in the upper registers, indulging in more pronounced harmonic variations, as the Tyner-Garrison-Jones rhythm axis subtly shifts gears to accomodate these intricacies. Without straying far from the basic themes or giving in to cheap sentiment, the saxophonist sustains a gorgeous melodic focus throughout BALLADS, marking this recital as another John Coltrane masterpiece.
Throughout John Coltrane's discography there are a handful of decisive and controversial albums that split his listening camp into factions. Generally, these occur in his later-period works such as Om and Ascension, which push into some pretty heady blowing. As a contrast, Ballads ...
| | Ann-Margret Bachelors' Paradise/On The Way Up CD (2002)
Fulcrum songs
$13.29 Originally released on RCA (2659) & RCA (2453). Includes liner notes by Al Fichera.
This discount-priced two-fer combines two of the five solo albums Ann-Margret recorded for RCA Victor Records during the 1960s, her fourth, Bachelors' Paradise (1963), followed by her second, On the Way Up (1962). The albums seem to have been chosen and sequenced as they were to provide a contrast, giving a sense of the different musical approaches Ann-Margret took during her recording career. That career to a back seat to her film acting, making it somewhat scattershot, even though it started promisingly (and prior to her movie work). In September 1961, she hit the Top 20 with the bluesy "I Just Don't Understand," featured on On the Way Up, and RCA Victor tried to position her as a female Elvis Presley, even having her cut "Heartbreak Hotel." That's the kind of material you hear on tracks 13-24 here, and though the singer isn't really a convincing rocker, her interpretations are so characteristically sexy that it doesn't much matter. Around the time that On the Way Up was released, Ann-Margret turned up on the Oscar telecast singing "Bachelor in Paradise," a traditional pop movie theme song, and Bachelors' Paradise, which leads off with that song, finds her fronting an orchestra on a collection of lush ballads, most of them vintage pop standards. She is credible in the role of pop chanteuse, ...
| | Flamenco: A Windham Hill Guitar Collection CD (2002)
Fulcrum album
$6.29 Flamenco purists might be upset that so many contemporary artists cop the centuries-old legacy of the music for their own pop-minded purposes, but the new age and worldbeat charts reflect a modern interest in this ancient style. Windham Hill has long been a label dedicated to creating samplers designed to appeal to both longtime fans and new converts to all types of music, and this collection is no exception. It features six popular genre classics from the last decade and four new tracks by Adam Del Monte and new age artist Sean Harkness. Individual songs were produced by veteran label artist and producer Brian Keane and others. The new material includes "Night in Marrakesh," a duet by Del Monte and world-renowned Turkish ney flute and oud master Omar Faruk Tekbilek; Del Monte's "Sombra Del Paraiso"; and Harkness' "A Mi Hermano" and "Corazones Diferentes." Tekbilek duets with Keane on the Middle Eastern-tinged "Imaginary Traveler," which first appeared on the Keane-Tekbilek ...
