David Helpling's debut album is an exotic mélange of ambient textures, pulsing electro-tribal percussion, and world-music influences. Helpling mans the guitars, keyboards, and electronics, and gets assistance from bassist and sometimes vocalist Matthew Stewart in creating the moody, alluring landscape of BETWEEN GREEN AND BLUE. As its title seems to promise, the album lulls listeners into the space between primary and secondary colors; between clear, ordered thoughts; between waking and dreaming.
Helpling's melodies are often plaintive and haunting, yet an insistent percussive pulse keeps BETWEEN GREEN AND BLUE highly energized, making the whole thing feel like a trip through some digitally enhanced dream jungle. Sustained bass evokes rolling thunder at times, while the sequenced, multi-patterned drums make the sonic veldt teem with the life of insects, animals, and creeping vegetation. The high-end production is detail-rich, deepening the sonic experience (which is best enjoyed under headphones), yet for all of its intensity, BETWEEN GREEN AND BLUE is very atmospheric and soothing.

| | Madlib Beat Konducta Vol. 3-4: India CD (2007)
Between Green And Blue CD music
$11.75 As prolific as he is talented, producer extraordinaire Madlib moved east for his second Beat Konducta installment, In India. Unlike Vol. 1-2, which was themed around an imaginary film, Vol. 3-4 has no clear overarching purpose, and the 34 tracks connect to one another only because their samples were all taken from Indian records from the '70s and '80s. And it's here that Madlib's high output works both positively and negatively for him. On one hand, he's able to offer an extraordinary amount of different sounds all tabled around a unifying idea (the sitar, the tabla), from the very RZA-esque "Smoke Circles" to the percussive "Freeze" to the fuzzy, layered vocals of "Dancing Girls Theme." But he also relies almost solely on his own innate and insane amount of natural skill, without always thinking much about the finished product, too excited about the next thing he's going to create to even remember what he did a few minutes before, and this carelessness shows up now and again, weakening the overall effect of the record. Cuts like "Masala," "Another Getaway," "Dark Alley Incidental Music," and "The Rip Off (Scene 3)" seem hastily thrown together without much consideration for either the album as a whole or even the tracks themselves, a little too droney and atonal to do much more but loop around tiredly. Of course, this same kind of approach, this flexibility, ...

Between Green And Blue album
$10.69 How weird is this? A group of Canadian musicians form a reggae band and fill their debut album with songs about cowboys, outlaws, and lawmen. Then again, the Reggae Cowboys do hail from south of the border -- no, not the U.S., but the Caribbean, and like most of their compatriots, these five West Indians were raised on Westerns. However, these Cowboys are not just regurgitating High Noon shootouts; instead, they're giving history a culturally diverse spin, both musically and lyrically. Many of their numbers are straightforward tales of life in the Old West, but the title track drives home the point of the entire album with its name-checks of Afro-American cowboys, outlaws, and lawmen. Musically, the bandmembers contradict their name by refusing to constrain themselves to a pure reggae format, blending in everything from rocksteady to spaghetti Westerns, alongside tinges of blues and a healthy dose of rock. "Hang 'Em High," the old pasta Western nugget, was obviously made for a reggae beat, and the Reggae Cowboys saddle it up and ride it into the sunset, while their version of the Eagles' "Hotel California" is a true Western connection. Their own compositions are just as strong, with sinuous-as-snakes basslines and crisp syncopated one-drop beats counterpointed by slide guitar, as on "Searchin' for de Outlaw," which glides gently into old school hip-hop, while "Barkin' Dogs" nods toward the Yellowman school of toasting. There are tinges of the Wailers and Steel Pulse to their sound as well, but the Cowboys' music and lyrics are so distinctive that you'll never confuse them with anything you've heard before. The Reggae Cowboys' truly original imagination and musical panache make this album an instant classic, a debut sure to round them up a posse of fans in no time. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
"Canadians with roots in the Caribbean, Reggae Cowobys are winning fans worldwide with their heart-rollicking reggae-based sound. Layering influences that include a mix of Caribbean genres, rock & roll and six-string spaghetti-western drama over reggae's "one-drop" riddim, they have come up with a unique sonic twist that points to a spiritual kinship between the pioneering black cowboys of the wild west and the rough rhythm riders of the equally untamed Jamaican music scene."The band was formed in Toronto in 1993. "We set out to be different," recalls Stone Ranger who was raised in Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Paris before coming to Toronto 20 years ago. A fan of Jimi Hendrix, Santana, The Meters and The Staple Singers, as well as such seminal Caribbean music giants as the Mighty Sparrow, Shadow, the Skatalites, Bob Marley, Ken Lazarus, Pluto Shervington, and Jimmy Cliff, he was also intrigued by the African-American cowboys of America's pioneer days. He launched an intensive ...
