| | Otomo: Cathode CD Otomo Yoshihide Discography of CDs
With 1999's Cathode, Otomo Yoshihide presents a mix of his experimental material. On the opening and closing tracks, "Modulation #2" and "Modulation #1" respectively, he makes full use of sine waves alongside the sounds of the sho, a traditional Japanese instrument. It should be noted that while some listeners find sine waves refreshing and mind-expanding, as they penetrate areas of your mind that sound does not normally hit so directly, other listeners -- specifically, those with tinnitus or other sensitivity to high-pitched sounds -- will find these frequencies unbearable. In contrast, "Cathode #1" presents an improvising ensemble of samplers and electronics, and traditional instruments, from cello to shamisen. The following cut, "Cathode #2" finds Yoshihide working solo, sampling on a hard disk recorder. Yoshihide continues to explore sound experimentation with this release, never looking back to past projects such as Ground Zero. ~ Joslyn Layne

Toward the close of her Milestone years, Flora Purim teamed up with producer/keyboardist George Duke -- and the imprint of Duke, then entering his funkified "Dukey Stick" period, is heavy enough to dominate the record. Very often, Duke uses his then rhythm section of bassist Byron Miller (alternating with Alphonso Johnson) and drummer Ndugu Chandler to give the grooves a definite '70s funk feel -- and percussionist Airto adapts his talents seamlessly to this way of life. Duke's electronic ...
| | Jonas Hellborg Octave Of The Holy Innocents CD (1995)
Otomo: Cathode
$13.85 Those familiar with the respective musicians discographies might normally expect this affair to be a turbocharged, jazz/fusion set also featuring wacko, prog metal type characteristics. Such is not the case with this production, as these artists opt for the "unplugged" route. On the other hand, there's no lack of excitement here, as this acoustic-based power trio generates quite a bit of momentum in concert with a few ethereally ...
| | Ginger Baker's Airforce CD (1970)
Otomo: Cathode
$13.75 Reissue of the acclaimed drummer's 1970 post Cream project, recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall. He is joined by many special guests here including, Steve Winwood, Rick Grech, Chris Wood, Denny Laine, Graham Bond & more.
For a change, the late 1960s yielded up a supergroup that lived up to its hype and then some. Ginger Baker's Air Force was recorded live at Royal Albert Hall in January of 1970 -- in fact, this may be the best-sounding live album ever to come out of that notoriously difficult venue -- at a show that must have been a wonder to watch, as the ten-piece band blazed away in sheets of sound, projected delicate flute parts behind multi-layered African percussion, or built their songs up Bolero-like, out of rhythms from a single instrument into huge jazz-cum-R&B crescendos. Considering that this was only their second gig, the group ...
