David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness sits on the edge of the Klezmer tradition and is always jabbing at its boundaries. The music is always a little bit more unbridled, a bit more passionate, and a tad more discordant than your bubbe's klezmer records, which is not to say that it falls into the same camp as other punk, pop, or jazz-oriented groups that treat klezmer like a quaint novelty. Krakauer, with his virtuoso clarinet playing and incredibly tight and talented backing band, always shows respect for the heart of klezmer music -- these songs orbit around a pure core. The only tune which truly journeys out into left field is "Living With the H," which deconstructs and reassembles the ubiquitous classic "Hava Nagila," a song which almost begs to be messed with. The effect is not unlike a jazz band who can tip their hats to tradition without having to hash out another tired version of "My Foolish Heart." Krakauer has accepted that klezmer has never been a static form of music and has no problem imbuing his own sense of creativity into Klezmer Madness within the constraints of this classic style. ~ Stacia Proefrock

David Krakauer Trio: David Krakauer (clarinet, bass clarinet); Michael Alpert (vocals, accordion, violin, guitar); David Licht (percussion).Dirty Linen (2-3/96, p.77) - "More than just another klezmer record. The raging clarinet player from the famed Klezmatics continues their esoteric path on his first solo record....Kraukauer has created a platform from which klezmer--and all Jewish-inspired music--can move forward."
Option (1-2/96, p.100) - "...a genre stretcher....An innovative departure that avoids the dullness of some `world fusion' pastiches, this album succeeds mainly because it is so firmly rooted..."

Klezmer Madness! album

EVERCLEAR, AMC's finest hour and one the '90s' most powerful albums, is simultaneously lush and searing, heartache and despair borne out in elegant arrangements that combine fragile prettiness and soul-baring howls of pain. Multi-instrumentalist Bruce Kaphan rose to the occasion of his production debut. The canyons of reverb on the instruments are strangely appropriate, highlighting the almost decadent, tragically beautiful feel of the songs. Keyboards, pedal steel, and acoustic guitars drift like abandoned ships swirling around in a colorfully tempestuous sea full of unknown nautical demons. Guitarist Vudi contributes some of the most artful, non-traditional sounds ever concocted by a "rock" axeman. The album begins with a slow, soulful lament to a love who's either sleeping or dead, before taking up the subject of mortality more fully in the anthemic "Rise," written by Eitzel for an AIDS-stricken friend. Eitzel observes the trials of those around him on "Ex-Girlfriend," but "Sick of Food" turns his gaze inward, breathlessly describing his alienation from virtually everything and his simultaneous longing for connection. His disaffection grows more ...

Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded in his mope for a smile, no fear of that anytime soon. The building blocks of their sound are mostly the same too. What makes a difference here is a boost in the overall energy level from unrelenting gloom to mostly sad, a slightly expanded sonic palette that makes room for field recordings and a wider range of drum sounds, and most importantly, some really good songs. Chief among them are the Beth Arzy-sung "Idyllwild" which, much like Helen Reddy on the last album, fairly bursts out of the speakers like sun through the clouds, "Darker, Colder, Slower," which has the kind dramatic ...

For a spell during the late '90s and early 21st century, the record label of choice for second wave thrash metallists Testament was Spitfire. Over the course of five albums, the group issued a pair of studio albums (Demonic and The Gathering), and a pair of live sets (Live at the Fillmore and Live in London), as well as a set which was comprised of re-recordings of early Testament classics (First Strike Still Deadly). Although Testament made the jump to another label (Nuclear Blast), Spitfire wasn't through with their old pals, as they offered the appropriately titled The Spitfire Collection in 2007, which collected highlights from the aforementioned quintet of albums. Despite this 14-track set not including original versions of the early Testament classics, what you do get is a pretty faithful representation ...
