| | Great Jewish Music: Burt Bacharach CD
Recorded between August and October 1996. Includes liner notes by John Zorn.
In the late 1990s, Burt Bacharach has been "rediscovered" as one of America's great songwriters. He was featured in the AUSTIN POWERS, INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY film and has collaborated with longtime fan Elvis Costello. Here, paying tribute to the man and his music are the cream of New York City's "downtown" jazz/experimental music scene. In doing so, these musicians reaffirm the resilience and timeless appeal of the Bacharach catalog.
The cover versions range from the quietly respectful (Marc Ribot's pensive, touching "Don't Go Breaking My Heart;" Dave Douglas' "Wives and Lovers") to the surreal (Elliott Sharp's Zappa/surf-style take on "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence;" a jazzy, chamber-music "Promises, Promises"). Also here are the twisted and the downright wacky ("The Look Of Love;" a perfect-for-Halloween "What's New Pussycat"). "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" will interest jazz fans of the hip-hop/groove persuasion, and "I Say A Little Prayer" will delight post-bop jazz fans. A varied, unusual and compelling listen.Entertainment Weekly (5/23/97, p.65) - "...this two-disc set pays tribute to the pop tunesmith as a serious composer....Challenging and full of surprises." - Rating: A- Great Jewish Music: Burt Bacharach Music | List Price | $22.97 (You save $3.82) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs, Jazz, Nostalgia, Experimental Rock, Jazz Collections, Tributes, World, Box Sets, Jewish | | Label | Tzadik | | Orig Year | 1997 | | All Time Sales Rank | 66372 | | CD Universe Part number | 1164552 | | Catalog number | 7114 | | Discs | 2 | | Release Date | May 20, 1997 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | John Zorn (Compilation) |

Great Jewish Music: Burt Bacharach album
$18.39 This stunning, double-disc set selects some of John Zorn's best compositions for Masada (his acoustic jazz group that blends Klezmer melodies with avant-garde improvisation) and adapts them for chamber ensemble. In addition to his duties as composer, arranger and producer (he does not play on the album), Zorn assembled some of the finest progressive musicians around--clarinetist David Krakauer, keyboard player John Medeski, violinist Mark Feldman, cellist Erik Friedlander, guitarist Mark Ribot, and trumpeter Dave Douglas, among others--into different group configurations.
The arrangements of these compositions are markedly different than their original versions. Whereas the Masada quartet performances are rhythmic, jazz-based, and often frenetic, the music on BAR KOKHBA is ...

Great Jewish Music: Burt Bacharach CD music
$13.29 Part of the Tzadik label's Radical Jewish Culture Series, which sought to highlight great music by Jews (instead of focusing on music with distinct Jewish cultural influences, though the two are not mutually exclusive), Great Jewish Music: Marc Bolan is also part of a smaller series of tribute albums put out by the label. The diverse lineup of honored artists, which includes Serge Gainsbourg and Burt Bacharach, is presented on albums that feature interpretations by some of the avant-garde and experimental community's most talented musicians. Bolan may seem like the gritty odd-man-out in such company, but John Zorn, the creative force holding the reins at Tzadik, knows an influential musician when he sees one. Indeed, ripples of the impact that Marc Bolan and his band T. Rex had on punk and rock musicians can still be felt more than two decades after his death. His delicious creepiness is all over this album, especially on Kramer's version of "Get It On," where a child's voice singing over up-tempo drums and jangly guitar (with flute, drum machine, and string elements thrown ...

Great Jewish Music: Burt Bacharach music CDs
$13.65 The first project Mike Patton worked on after the April 1998 breakup of Faith No More was the all-star Fantomas. Heavy metal fans everywhere salivated at the lineup of Patton on vocals, the Melvins' Buzz Osborne on guitar, ex-Slayer Dave Lombardo on drums, and Mr. Bungle's Trevor Dunn on bass. But as longtime fans have come to learn long ago, always expect the unexpected with Patton-related projects. The band's self-titled debut (the first for Patton's record label, Ipecac) is far from your ...

$10.99 With his silken, suave, self-assured vocals recalling a cross between Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr. has a natural voice for celebrating Christmastime. So it's no surprise that with the 2008 holiday season in full swing, Connick returns with his third holiday record, the sprightly WHAT A NIGHT! A CHRISTMAS ALBUM. As it is with his non-Yuletide LPs, WHAT A NIGHT! is a medley of his nimble, elegant takes on time-tested classics and disarming originals. The set opens on Connick's vibrant re-envisioning of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," heavy on exotic percussion and redolent of his ...
