Klezmer, NY is a joy to listen to! Full of drama, fun and intensity, it is musical mastery, for certain. Klezmer Madness, led by accomplished clarinetist David Krakauer, weave an instrumental narrative of the imagined musical meeting between clarinet greats jazzman Sidney Bechet and klezmer king Naftule Brandwein. The opening track, "Alt(dot)klezmer," functions as title music, leading the audience into storytime mode with an irresistible funk klezmer groove. The action opens on a dark and stormy NYC (home to both of the legendary musicians for 15 years up through the late '40s) with a whipping wind of music and thunderous playing. Seeking shelter, the two end up in a Roumanian wine cellar (track three). By halfway through the tune, the music has bent to include the squeaking, off-echoes of a blisteringly drunk accordion. Distilled moments of this excellent and engrossing musical story include: animated clarinet conversations, arrangements insistent on making you dance, ghost arias, and flyingly fun scenes of a crowded hall where dance partners are spun and whipped around. The music zooms out from the story with a spaghetti western-tinged guitar and a death march drum, providing an appropriate cinematic close. Highly recommended for all who enjoy klezmer, klezmer jazz, or creative jazz in general. ~ Joslyn Layne

Klezmer, Ny music CDs
$6.09 Nowadays, when a director makes a film, the priority seems to lie as much in the managing of the movie's genesis as it is in creating a perfect soundtrack. While the script, the actors and the production values can establish a film's mood and direction, a well-sculpted soundtrack can seal that feeling, adding the final piece to a successful puzzle. When successful, soundtracks can even add an extra dimension to the finished project. The soundtrack to SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE is such a triumph, working precisely beacuse of the sustained, timeless romanticism of its collection of standards.
This romantic film required an ageless repetoire. Thus, the songs that ...

| | Bobby Previte 23 Constellations Of Joan Miro CD (2002)
Klezmer, Ny album
$13.39 THE 23 CONSTELLATIONS OF JOAN MIRO is packaged with a 36 page booklet containing color reproductions of all 23 of Joan Miro's masterpieces.
Composer/percussionist/bandleader Bobby Previte often likes to stretch out, whether leading his modern creative jazz ensemble Weather Clear, Track Fast, putting his own spin on Miles' fusion repertoire with the Horse, or kicking his avant bar band, Latin for Travelers, into high gear. On some of his best work, Previte builds compositions from initial core rhythms and adds layers of structure a bit at a time, taking ten or more minutes to assemble all the pieces into a final musical picture. The 23 Constellations of Joan Miró, recorded in New York during the summer of 2001, takes a completely different approach. Previte has handed himself a unique challenge ...
| | John Coltrane Love Supreme CDs (1964) Remastered; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Klezmer, Ny CD music
$21.05 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson.
A LOVE SUPREME is the essential example of the genius of John Coltrane. In what has become the apotheosis of jazz music, this eminently accessible work bridges the gap between music and spirituality, between art and life. With the ultimate incarnation of the jazz quartet, Coltrane brings together all of his turbulent elements into a cohesive paean to spirituality, one which is fully appreciable by the uninitiated.
A LOVE SUPREME is a 33-minute work divided into four movements. "Acknowledgment" starts the album with a heraldic summoning from Coltrane's tenor saxophone, full and joyous, which approximates the tone of the prayer he provides in the album's liner notes. The ...
| | Guru Jazzmatazz CD (1993)
Klezmer, Ny music CDs
$9.19 As half of the pioneering duo Gang Starr, Guru can count himself among a select handful of innovators (DJ Jazzy Jeff, Stetsasonic, Native Tongues) who in the late '80s introduced jazz's tonal complexity into the hip-hop universe. It makes a certain amount of sense then, that his solo debut is actually a series of collaborations with various jazz artists. ...
| | Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster CD (1959)
Klezmer, Ny songs
$8.09 The last 5 tracks are previously unreleased songs from the original sessions.
This album combines the talents of two jazz giants. Saxophonist Ben Webster was one of the instrument's most influential exponents, primarily through his work with Duke Ellington. Mulligan, meanwhile, was an integral part of the 50s west coast movement and this set represents the confluence of two different generations. The featured quintet includes drummer Mel Lewis and bassist Leroy Vinnegar (who later played on the Doors' The Soft Parade), but ...
