With his spiky, angular style, Marc Ribot emerged as one of the most distinctive guitar stylists of the 1980s and '90s, spicing up the music of Tom Waits and Elvis Costello while remaining a vital part of the NYC avant-garde scene. YO! I KILLED YOUR GOD is Ribot at his most in-your-face; uncompromising frontal guitar assaults are the order of the day, but the contexts vary throughout. Close listeners will hear echoes of Sonny Sharrock's free jazz, the Minutemen's avant-punk, Sonic Youth's noise-rock, and Eugene Chadbourne's sonic perversity.
Ribot kicks things off with a bang, on his radical reinvention of Patsy Cline's "I Fall To Pieces," declaiming the lyrics like some political manifesto over strangulated bursts of skronk. From there, it's a wild ride encompassing everything from a quirky take on the jazz standard "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise" to "Jamon Con Yuca," which echoes the sound of Ribot's side project, Los Cubanos Postizos.
Personnel: Marc Ribot (guitar); Chris Wood, Roger Kleier, J.D. Foster, Sebastian Steinberg, Dougie Bowne, Jm Pugliese, Christine Bard, Mark Anthony Thompson.

Guitarist Marc Ribot is well-known and respected for his session work with the likes of Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, as well as his association with John Zorn and other downtown New York experimental musicians. Like several others in that scene, Ribot has formed a group to create an outlet for an interest in ethnic music, in this case, the music of the late Cuban composer, instrumentalist, and bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez, who wrote most of the tunes on this CD. The ...

| | Ambarchi & Avenaim Alter Rebbe's Nigun CD (1999)
Yo! I Killed Your God music CDs
$13.99 A translation of The Alter Rebbe's Nigun into the modern (future) music of a post-punk world, this album is an intriguing sound representation of each of the four worlds, or levels, of creation as outlined in the Jewish religious text, Tanya (the written law of Chabad Hasidic teaching). Niginah are Hasidic melodies traditionally composed by Jewish spiritual leaders for Sabbath and holidays. The music of this album is based around the concept of the magnum opus of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (the Alter Rebbe), his "nigun of four movements," or "the Alter Rebbe's Nigun." Former Orthodox Hasidic students of the ...

| | Children On The Corner Rebirth CD (2003)
Yo! I Killed Your God CD music
$13.09 Even more come across the time-worn paths of ether and obscurity: Children on the Corner is a collective made up of ex-Miles Davis sidemen from his eclectic years that include Sonny Fortune, Michael Henderson, Badal Roy, Ndugu Chancler, and Barry Finnerty. The band is led by keyboardist and composer Michael Wolff, the only non-Davis personnel. Rebirth was recorded live over two nights at the popular Oakland, CA, nightspot Yoshi's. The program is a set of tunes from Davis, as well as some group and Wolff originals. The album kicks off with one of the most inspiring readings of Josef Zawinul's "Directions." For over 21 minutes, Fortune and Wolff explore the outer reaches of Davis' loose harmonic universe. The small vamps and riffs are ...
