| | Stan Getz Final Concert Recording CDs (2001)
La Esperanza
$11.79 Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Kenny Barron (piano); Eddie Del Barrio, Frank Zottoli (synthesizer); Alex Blake (bass); Terri Lyne Carrington (drums). Recorded live at the Munich Philharmonic Hall, Munich, Germany in July 1990. Includes liner notes in Zan Stewart. Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Kenny Barron (piano); Eduardo del Barrio, Frank Zottolik (synthesizer); Terri Lyne Carrington (drums). Recording information: Munich Philharmonic Hall (1990). The title of this two-CD set is not accurate since tenor saxophonist Stan Getz recorded People Time (a Verve set) six months after this one. However the release of this music is quite welcome, for Getz is heard near the end of his life still in prime form. He is joined by pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Alex Blake, and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington throughout the Munich concert. Five songs (four co-written by Getz, Eddie Del Barrio, and Herb Alpert) have Del Barrio and Frank Zotoli added on synthesizers; these slightly commercial numbers had recently been recorded for Getz's A&M record, Apasionado. The tenor sounds typically passionate on those weaker tracks, but the real reasons to acquire this two-fer are the nine quartet numbers. Getz is quite exuberant on such tunes as "On a Slow Boat to China," Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes," "El Cajon," Kenny Barron's "Voyage," and "What Is This Thing Called Love." He takes one brilliant improvisation after another, making this set one to search for. ~ Scott Yanow The title of this two-CD set is partially correct, as it is likely the final complete concert featuring Stan Getz to be recorded and issued, though the live compilation of concert excerpts with pianist Kenny Barron (People Time) was recorded the following year. This performance at the Munich Philharmonic Hall is a bit unusual, in that the tenor saxophonist augmented his quartet with two synthesizer players, Eddy Del Barrio and Frank Zottolik, for some bland arrangements from his disappointing Apasionado CD made for Herb Alpert, in which Getz's majestic tone is the only object of interest, as the melodies are rather forgettable. Far better are the straight-ahead renditions of old favorites like ...

| | Frank Ferrucci Music Of The Americas Ensemble CD (2009)
La Esperanza
$12.69 The Pan-American Music of the Americas Ensemble, led by pianist/composer Frank Ferrucci, was one of the prominent Latin/Brazilian Jazz Groups on the New York City Music Scene in the late 1980s and 1990s. To celebrate Frank's music and the 2009 re-birth of the Music of the Americas Ensemble, Baioca Records has released a 13 track CD of never released sessions of this notable group.Frank Ferrucci's broad compositional palate has long been a focus for New York's most acclaimed Latin and Brazilian leaning jazz players. He has an almost Ellingtonian ability to incorporate the strengths of his soloists into rich, flexible structures that allow them to step out of ensemble to wail. And so he attracted to these recordings the very best: Claudio Roditi (trumpet), Mario Rivera (tenor sax and flute), Dick Oatts (alto sax), Conrad Herwig (trombone), Rolando BriseƱo (alto and soprano saxes , flute), Bernard Purdie, Richie Morales, Kim Plainfield, and Phoenix Rivera (drums), Lincoln ...
