Mixing metallic guitar heroics with funk, hip-hop, electronica, and a cinematic soundtrack feel, Buckethead's Monsters and Robots is yet another eclectic opus inspired in large part by low-budget monster/horror, martial arts, and science fiction movies, especially those of Japan. Like any Buckethead album, the music does meander in spots, but this outing does improve on its predecessor Colma by employing a variety of guest bassists; Primus' Les Claypool (as well as drummer Brain), Bootsy Collins, and Bill Laswell all enliven the music's rhythmic underpinnings in ways that Buckethead's own bass playing on Colma didn't. Plus, the contributions of guest DJs Phonosycograph Disk, DJ Eddie Def, and Xtrakd are inventive and stimulating, complementing rather than confusing the musical mix. It may not be completely consistent, but Monsters and Robots offers more than enough musical derangement to satisfy. ~ Steve Huey

Incredible, Stupendous, Over Whelming, Creepy, Mind Blowing etc... This stuff blew me away, Michael Myers, Michael Myers, comin to get you!! Where it stops nobody knows. The Ballad of Buckethead. Sci Fi/Horror meets Rock/Techno and eveything else. is there nothing this half man half chicken can not accomplish with his wooden stick and metal strings. Where it stops nobody knows.

What the first guy said...
I love this album. Most people would likely consider this too weird and out there for them to hold it in any moderately high regard, but here are the facts, as I see 'em: Buckethead is frickin insane and this is his masterpiece. I just love hearing how odd and at times, creepy his style is. The only artist in my collection I could compare him to in terms of uniqueness is, rather ironically, Primus. Perhaps it is foolish of me to say if you like this guy you'll like them, but hey... the way I see it, Monsters and Robots is best friends with Pork Soda. I love all of the songs, but the ones that seem to stick out to me (as well as others I have showed him to) are Jump Man, Night of the Slunk, Who Me?, The Shape Vs. Buckethead, and Scalpula. The Ballad, Stick Pit and Nun Chuka Kata are also really good. I would suggest giving this album a try, particularly if you are looking for a CD of his to start with. Unless you're after something mellow; in that case, I'd suggest Colma or Electric Tears. Yeah I like it, it's good.

For a guy who takes his sartorial cues from teenage horror flicks (he plays onstage with a weird sort of hockey mask on his face), Buckethead sure does make pretty music.
