In the early '90s, no one could accuse Einstürzende Neubauten of being musically stagnant. The German industrial pioneers had evolved considerably since the early '80s, and Interim (which was recorded in 1991 and 1992 and released in 1993) is hardly a carbon copy of the band's earlier releases. By mainstream pop/rock standards, this five-track EP is more accessible than the Einstürzende Neubauten of ten years earlier. The band that gave listeners 1981's Kollaps was a hardcore industrial outfit; the Mark Chung/N.U. Unruh/Alexander Hacke/Blixa Bargeld/F.M. Einheit lineup heard on Interim combines industrial elements with a relatively melodic, if skewed, post-punk/alternative rock outlook. "Salamandrina" is more eerie than abrasive, while two versions of "The Interimlovers" (one in English, the other in German) are more Depeche Mode than Throbbing Gristle. And even the dark, ominous "3 Thoughts" isn't as abrasive and forceful as some of the group's early stuff. Inevitably, some of the longtime fans who heard this EP missed the Einstürzende Neubauten of the early '80s and longed for the days of Kollaps and Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T. But that doesn't mean that Interim is without merit -- only that the EP is undeniably different from the more noisy recordings that Einstürzende provided in the beginning. Interim isn't among the group's essential releases, and it isn't recommended to those who fancy themselves industrial purists. Nonetheless, it's still a decent, respectable effort that fans of Einstürzende's '90s work will enjoy. ~ Alex Henderson
Recorded at Conny's Studio, Wolperath, Germany and Hansa and Spliff Studios, Berlin, Germany from 1991-1992. The song "3 Thoughts" was originally composed for La La La Human Steps.

| | Einsturzende Neubauten Perpetuum Mobile CD (2004)
Interim songs
$9.55 A series of sustained reflections of the day-to-day world, PERPETUUM MOBILE finds Einstürzende Neubauten exploring the subtle power of ambient noise and textures. The group doesn't blaze radically new stylistic ground--gone are the days of bulldozers, jackhammers, and Blixa Bargeld's vocal freakouts, along ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Interim album
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Interim CD music
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; ...

Interim album
$12.95 Welsh trio Stereophonics' fifth album dishes up seriously powerful hard rock that distinguishes itself in sound and attack from the band's earlier releases. With the exception of a few cuts (the pulsing ballad "Rewind," the expansive "Lolita"), LANGUAGE. SEX. VIOLENCE. OTHER? packs a remarkably ferocious punch. No one would claim Stereophonics are breaking new musical ground here, yet their combination of post-grunge (bringing to mind Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains) and tuneful Britpop (a la the Stone Roses and Oasis) is synthesized in a fresh, convincing way.
The opening track, "Superman," builds on an edgy, repetitive rhythm and two voices, one mid-range and one falsetto, before launching into the crunching rock verses of "Doorman," which downshifts to an understated, slinky chorus. The near-danceable groove of "Brother" provides the perfect backdrop for frontman Kelly Jones's fierce, raw-throated singing. The production--pristine, razor-sharp, and full of lush detail--sends every guitar solo and drum fill straight through the listener's brain. This is glossy hard rock that has all the right elements, and is stylish and well-packaged enough to seduce ...
