| | Laurent Garnier Unreasonable Behaviour CD Laurent Garnier Discography of CDs
More complex and idiosyncratic than his previous full-length works (and much less danceable as a consequence), Unreasonable Behaviour focuses on midtempo jams in the verge between evocative techno, electro-jazz, and even melancholy synth-pop. If 1997's 30 was his Chicago album, this one is definitely the Detroit installment, from the Motor City shoutouts at the end of the excellent "Communications from the Lab" to the future-imperfect electro track "Greed (Part 1+2)." Still, most of these tracks come closer to updated jazz-fusion than techno, with highlights like "City Sphere," "The Sound of the Big Babou," and "Forgotten Thoughts" driven by fuzzy, distorted melodies with dreamy synthesizer lines over the top and an emphasis on live(-sounding) drumming. He'd surely think twice before plugging any of these tracks into one of his DJ sets, but Unreasonable Behaviour is a solid fusion of jazz and techno. ~ John Bush

Earning a footnote in rock history as the band that ultimately morphed into Crazy Horse, Neil Young's infamous backing band, the Rockets deserve a high perch in the annals of garage psych in their own right due to this self-titled 1968 full-length. Featuring a core line-up of Danny Whitten, Ralph Molina, and Billy Talbot (all future Crazy Horse members) along with Leon Whitsell, George Whitsell, and amplified violinist Bobby Notkoff, THE ROCKETS is a revelatory set of songs.
On the strength of Notkoff's electrifying fiddle freak-outs and Whitten and Co.'s doo-wop inspired vocals, the band rises above standard late '60s murk. "Let Me Go" builds on a gritty riff until an extended dissonant solo casts Notkoff as the West Coast answer to John Cale. Tracks such as the aching "Won't You Say You'll Stay," the country shuffler "Try My Patience," and the druggy "Pills Box" highlight the soulful presence and underrated songwriting that would turn Neil Young into a devout fan of Whitten's. Essential listening for both Young fans and '60s psych enthusiasts.
Digitally remastered edition of the sole 1968 album from the L.A rockers who split up when 3/5ths of the band became Neil Young's backing band Crazy Horse. Everything has a beginning, right? And before the classic, much imitated proto-Grunge Garage-band sound of Crazy Horse was even a concept or option, Neil Young walked into an ill-attended show by the band he had discovered on the very recording ...
