Chicken Shack Boogie
$11.99 Nipping at the heels of wiz-kid blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who debuted at age 18, comes 16-year-old Jonny Lang, the most soulful guitar slinger ever to make it out of junior high school. Lang's debut, much like Shepherd's LEDBETTER HEIGHTS, features a mix of choice covers and co-written originals. But whereas HEIGHTS leans in a Delta-blues direction, Lang's blues has more of an R&B flavor.
The Clavinet and Hammond B-3 organ on the title track and "Hit The Ground Running" help give LIE TO ME a funky swagger. As for influences, Lang's choices of Ike Turner's "Matchbox" and Syl Johnson's "Back For A Taste Of Your Love" show a taste for rousing shuffles and Memphis soul. Lang shows his commercial instincts by wrapping up the album with "When I Come To You" and the acoustic "Missing Your Love," two songs that wouldn't sound out of place on a recent Eric Clapton album.
Recorded at Oar Fin Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota and House Of Blues, Memphis, Tennessee.
Personnel: Jonny Lang (vocals, guitar, background vocals); Ted Larsen (guitar); Dennis Morgan (acoustic guitar); Pat Hayes (harmonica); ...
| | Boney James Seduction CD (1995)
Chicken Shack Boogie
$8.85 Boney James comes from somewhere over in the easy listening corner of jazz, with rhythms bordering on funk in one direction and soft soul in the other, with a lot of programmed drums (very well done) and deep, dark synth bass. Sometimes a male voice will venture out into the mix, but this isn't a particularly significant portion of the program -- just the right sort of sound for this kind of laid-back, late-night, easy listening material. James himself handles alto, tenor, and soprano sax duties with ease, playing relaxed, weaving lines throughout each cut and working with some decidedly pleasant arrangements. Seduction is smooth and self-assured, well-dressed, and fairly unremarkable. ~ Steven McDonald

| | Boney James Sweet Thing CD (1997)
Chicken Shack Boogie
$8.69 Saxophonist Boney James plays pure, mostly instrumental "slow jams"; basically "Quiet Storm"-style smooth jazz/R&B. "East Bay" is a case in point--a mellifluous alto saxophone lilts along above a slow, funky groove. The mood is mellow in the extreme--this album would be a good choice for setting a romantic mood. "Within Attraction" is another relaxing tune, opening with a spare, drums-only introduction, then evolving into an exploration of a simple, compelling melodic theme. Vocalist Al Jarraeu is highlighted on "I Still Dream." On "After the Rain," another "soft jazz" number, two saxophones play off of each other in a pleasing give-and-take. If you like your mood music low-key, this is recommended.

| | Sax Gordon Have Horn Will Travel CD (1998)
Chicken Shack Boogie
$12.29 Duke Robillard's sax player, Gordon Beadle aka Sax Gordon, comes to the plate with his debut album and delivers a disc with some true horn-honking wallop to it. Produced by Robillard and with essentially him and his band backing Gordon for this session, this is a fun album that's thoroughly grounded in older styles. But at the same ...

| | Rory Gallagher Photo Finish CD (1978) (Import) Germany
Chicken Shack Boogie
$9.89 Remixed and expanded (with two additional tracks recorded but chopped off the vinyl version) for its debut on CD in 1999, this is a sturdy, workmanlike Rory Gallagher release. Reverting back to a trio, Gallagher toughens up his sound and blazes through some robust blues rockers like "Last of the Independents," "Shadow Play," and "Brute Force & Ignorance" (one of his best hard rock riffs) with nervy energy. Gallagher's swampy side emerges on "Cloak & Dagger," another song that explores his fascination with B-movie gumshoes, a common theme for the Irish blues-rocker. His guitar work is typically excellent throughout, especially on "Overnight Bag," as he overdubs himself on acoustic. Still, the album has a samey feel due to some of the songwriting not being quite up to snuff, and a few tracks, like the moody, slow-burning "Feel to the Fire," stretched well past its breaking point to over six minutes. Of the two additional tunes, "Early Warning" ...

| | Afghan Whigs Congregation CD (1991)
Chicken Shack Boogie
$10.15 The third Afghan Whigs album, 1992's CONGREGATION, turns on one clear thematic axis: relationships going bad. CONGREGATION's emotional terrain covers the straits between man and heroin ("I'm Her Slave") and those between men and women. Varying the Sub Pop "grunge" formula, the Whigs stretch their wings musically, including several clean-sounding slow songs. If not for the subject matter, these could probably be called ballads.
Drummer Steven Earle hammers out solid frames for Rick McCollum's guitar showmanship, but this is really singer and lyricist Greg Dulli's hour. His emerging persona as damaged sinner is in full force here. The aggressive, snarling predator of "Conjure Me" promises to "Turn on you, ...
