Black & White; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English A dead gangster makes a pact with the devil so he can come back to earth and exact revenge on his murderer. Harry Segal, the writer of HERE COMES MR. JORDAN, sends a soul in the other direction in ANGEL ON MY SHOULDER. Gangster Eddie Kagel (Paul Muni) is killed by a buddy and lands in hell. After an unsuccessful attempt to break out of hell, Nick, the Devil, (Claude Rains) strikes a deal with Eddie. Nick will allow Eddie back to Earth if Eddie will destroy the reputation of upstanding judge Frederick Parker. Eddie agrees to the deal and Nick zaps his soul into Frederick's body. Eddie/Frederick's aim is to off his turncoat buddy as soon as possible, but Nick isn't interested in any funny business. As Eddie and Nick attempt to ruin Frederick, Parker's fiancée (Anne Baxter) is rearing up to wed Eddie/Frederick, and her affections cause Eddy to reflect upon his devilish mission. ANGEL ON MY SHOULDER, director Archie Mayo's final film, which was released in 1946, has retained its popularity over the years. John Ford's memorable screen version of John Steinbeck's epic novel of the Great Depression--often regarded as the director's best film--stars Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. After having served a brief prison sentence for manslaughter, Joad arrives at his family's Oklahoma farm only to find it abandoned. Muley (John Qualen), a neighbor now nearly mad with grief, tells Tom of the drought that has transformed the farmland of Oklahoma into a desert and of the preying land agents who have plowed under the shacks of the sharecroppers. Joined by former hellfire preacher Casy (John Carradine), Tom finds his extended family, including Pa (Charles Grapewin) and his indomitable Ma (Jane Darwell), packing their ramshackle truck to seek work in the fields of California. As the family treks across the country, their dissolution begins with the deaths of Tom's grandparents at close intervals. This delightful baseball fantasy stars Paul Douglas as Guffy McGovern, the most hard-hearted, foulmouthed, dictatorial baseball manager in the entire league, who has almost hit rock bottom with his losing team. His Pirates are in seventh place and getting worse. His hard-nosed training methods just aren't paying off. But one day he hears an otherworldy voice telling him to "look for a miracle in the third inning." It turns out that the Archangel Gabriel and his ball club, the Heavenly Choir Nine, want to help McGovern's losing team as long as he promises to stop swearing and fighting. Sure enough, as McGovern cleans up his act, his team starts to improve, and with the help of the invisible ghosts of baseball legends, the Pirates' chances for the pennant begin to look brighter. But things become more complicated for McGovern when a young orphan girl (Donna Cocoran) tells a reporter (Janet Leigh) she has seen angels in the outfield giving the players a hand, and McGovern's bizarre secret for success makes national headlines.
