Magellan's Impending Ascension is a truly great progressive rock work. Following the same formula as the previous Hour of Restoration, Impending Ascension features better, more consistent songwriting and a harder-edged sound. "Estadium Nacional" and "Waterfront Weirdos," both 11-minutes long, get the album off to a great start. They both feature timing and melody changes that have to be heard to be appreciated. Combined with the new, harder-edged sound, it's clear that Magellan has found its niche with this album. "Songsmith" and "Virtual Reality" are excellent five-minute songs, with the former built around a strong guitar riff and the latter around a strong melody. The last song of any consequence, "Storms and Mutiny," another 11-minute song, is about Magellan namesake Ferdinand Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe. This song builds throughout, reaching great intensity by the end on both guitar and vocals. Impending Ascension is a classic progressive rock album. ~ David White

Impending Ascension album
$13.45 The follow-up to Shadow Gallery is a progressive rock masterpiece. The biggest change from the debut is band maturity and album production. While Shadow Gallery showed the band's tremendous potential, Carved in Stone finds the band fulfilling that potential. The songwriting, already good, is much better and more consistent. ...

| | Explorers Club Age Of Impact CD (1998)
Impending Ascension music CDs
$13.85 This is another of the supergroup combinations from the Magna Carta label and is the brainchild of Trent Gardner of Magellan. It features Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa) on drums, Billy Sheehan (Talas) on bass, and the soloing of John Petrucci (Dream Theater). There are also several other guest musicians, such as Steve Howe (Yes) and James LaBrie (Dream Theater). It is one of the more intelligent and diverse progressive albums to emerge during the '90s. Unlike its predecessors, Black Light Syndrome and Liquid Tension Experiment, this is more of a progressive rock (as opposed to metal) recording in the tradition of Jethro Tull and Genesis. Bozzio's drumming adds a unique quality to the band, as do the diverse vocal stylings of each singer. It isn't often that you get to hear a single body of work that features consistent music with different vocalists and musicians changing throughout. There is the obvious risk that the music would sound too pieced together; however, this is a homogenous effort. It's a fairly large statement ...

| | Magellan Hundred Year Flood CD (2002)
Impending Ascension album
$13.85 Magellan is a group named for the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. With a name like that, one expects their albums to take you on a journey, and this one does not disappoint. The group is composed of Trent Gardner, Wayne Gardner, and Joe Franco. Together with some notable guests, they have produced a CD that both captures elements of classic progressive rock and carves out its own niche in the musical landscape. The disc contains only three songs, one of them the album opener, a 35-minute opus (divided into 13 CD tracks) entitled "The Great Goodnight." The album deals with the personal loss of the Gardner brothers, that of their brother, Jack Elroy, in the Vietnam war. The piece is an appropriately emotional one that covers a lot of musical ground. Indeed, the composition pulls you in and gets you so wrapped up that it really does not seem like 35 minutes have passed. The second number on the album is an instrumental entitled "Family Jewels." If you think that one sounds like Jethro Tull, a lot of it probably has to do with the presence of Tull's Ian Anderson playing flute on ...
| | Porcupine Tree In Absentia CD (2002)
Impending Ascension CD music
$8.59 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with ...

Impending Ascension CD music
$13.75 Horns echo over broken beats and voices ping and pong as DJ Spooky takes all of the releases in Thirsty Ear's Blue Series and gives them some serious crinkling, crumpling, and stretching on Celestial Mechanix: The Blue Series Mastermix. The challenge of the Blue Series is to take artists from different genres and break down the stylistic barriers between them. Heavy in concept for sure, but the series has offered up more than its fair share of outstanding records. Many releases have delivered on Thirsty Ear's promise of hearing "the shape of jazz to come," but Celestial Mechanix is all quirky, illbient, and echoing Spooky. Then again, with such a sprawling ...
