Arrangers: Robert Berry; Trent Gardner. The progressive metal-oriented Magna Carta label assembled a tribute album dedicated to Emerson, Lake & Palmer, with arrangers Robert Berry and Trent Gardner playing major roles in determining the music's direction. Encores, Legends & Paradox varies wildly, not only because of typical tribute album problems (some artists sticking too close to the original versions, others not quite capturing its essential elements), but also because Gardner's arrangements tend to be generic and ineffective. There are some good moments, and some decent ones below those, but digging them out might be more effort than many ELP fans are willing to invest. ~ Steve Huey The progressive metal-oriented Magna Carta label assembled a tribute album dedicated to Emerson, Lake & Palmer, with arrangers Robert Berry and Trent Gardner playing major roles in determining the music's direction. Nothing special Listening to this album is very frustrating. If you like ELP music, you might it. If you don't like Neo-prog orchestration, you will not. Heavy crunch and fuzz on the guitar, drummer literally pounding the snare, compression levels varying wildly within one song: very distracting from the amazing music for me. Personally, I don't believe covering a song should represent the notes. It should do it justice enough to be likable on it's own merits, not just becuase someone is 'playing good notes'. The originals are better in every way, to me. Submitted by pacificaudiolabs (Chatsworth CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An interesting tribute to ELP. If you like Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP), pick this up. It is interesting to see what others have done with their songs. Abscent are the great Greg Lake ballads and Tarkus is incomplete. It's a good quality tribute with some interesting twists. A little more guitar oriented, but the skill level is high and it is interesting to listen too. Submitted by a reviewer (Delaware, Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
