SOMEWHERE TO ELSEWHERE is destined to take its place as a landmark in the career of art rock veterans Kansas. Here the Topeka natives reunite where there's "no place like home," to create their first studio album with all-original members in 17 years. Recorded in a home-built studio on guitarist Kerry Livgren's farm, this collection returns the band to the heartland sound and crafted arrangements that made it a household name in the '70s.
The WWII-inspired epic "Icarus II" opens with a majestic intro, setting the tone for an heroic tale, while "The Coming Dawn (Thanatopsis)" is an inspiring ballad that single-handedly recaptures the essence of the classic Kansas sound, and "Myriad" brims with all the progressive elements that inspired countless like-minded acts in the '80s and '90s. While his voice has roughened slightly around the edges, vocalist Steve Walsh hasn't lost any of his fire and emotion, as evidenced by tracks such as "Distant Vision" and "Byzantium," both of which have roots that can be traced back to the band's LEFTOVERTURE era.

Kansas Somewhere To Elsewhere Songs Somewhere To Elsewhere Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Long Songs This is the classic Kansas sound from the days of Lefoverture, yet the songs are very long and sometimes tend to wander somewhat aimlessly. Nice listening if you have some idle time. Steve Walsh has a little rougher edge to his voice but he can still bring it. Submitted by ernie54 (Tovey, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Wonderful I love Kansas. They have been my favorite American band since their inception. This record was very enjoyable. The only reason I didn;t give it 5 starts is because they kept reaching back to revisit old themes. I believe they still have enough creativity to avoid having to draw upon old themes to make a record. They are incredible musicians and song writers and should be able to provide us with "new" material. And the new material on the record is awesome, keep it coming please! KANSAS isn't dead ! That's songs for eternity !!! Submitted by a reviewer (Switzerland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not good at all! Outside of "Icarus II" and "Distant Vision", this album is a complete and utter disappointment. There is no soul or range of emotion in the material, which was written by Kerry Livgren. The tone of the cd is extremely one dimensional. There is nothing like the lite funk of "Two Cents Worth" from MASQUE, or the musicianship of "The Spider" from POKR. Since Steve Walsh did not write any of the songs, the balance that was present on KANSAS' best releases is gone.
Since Steve is retired from writing now, the chances of a new vibrant recording from this once great band are zero. Submitted by Bleu (Tn, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Passion of Kansas Returns!! By far, some of the best Kansas music ever recorded..no pop rock here, just pure talent, incredible lyrics, and a great mix of music. It's nice to see all the original members contributing to this release, and it shows off the magic and passion the band once had...and still does!!! $6.85 The high point of Kansas's long career, 1977's POINT OF KNOW RETURN found the American heartlanders finally striking the perfect balance between complex prog-rock, hard-hitting heavy guitar work, and crafty pop sensibilities. This is perhaps best exemplified by the title cut, a sparkling tune full of jaunty interaction between piano and violin that moves unerringly through some tricky musical maneuvers, while remaining engagingly catchy and accessible. The electrifying riffs that fly around in "Lightning's Hand" and "The Spider" show that the knack for tunes like the previous album's classic ...

Somewhere To Elsewhere music CDs
$13.29 In the late '50s, seemingly every major -- and sometimes not so major -- city in America had its own small, independent record label. All of them were vying for a share of the marketplace, recording local talent, hoping that elusive hit record would emerge from their often crude endeavors. Some of these were basically one man operations, recording their sides in homemade basement studios and pressing up small quantities for local consumption. During this time period, the place to go and the man to see in Minnesota was David Hersk and his ultra-primitive studio-cum-record company, Gaity Records. This is the first of two volumes devoted to the small batch of 45s that were issued on Gaity and its three subsidiaries, Perry, Twayne, and Laura. All of these issues are ultra rare with only a mere handful of copies passing through collector's hands over the decades. The reason for all this attention being paid to this dime sized-label are twofold. One, Hersk created an ultra-primitive sound ...
