Zingaia is Michael Breene and Katlyn Breene. David Gordon and Steve Gordon, mainstays at Sequoia Records, co-produced Beneath the Veil with Michael Breene. Katlyn Breene wrote the lyrics and the text for the liner notes, providing the etymology of each composition. This is a set of rhythmic world music inspired by Middle Eastern mysticism. Katlyn's beautiful voice invokes warmth, harmony, and love. The atmospheric soundscape is mostly acoustic. Michael composed and performed the music. This is an enjoyable CD that will appeal to fans of Natacha Atlas, Vas, Sheila Chandra, Yungchen Lhamo, and Rasa. ~ Jim Brenholts

| | Don Felder Airborne CD (1983)
Beneath The Veil songs
$9.69 1983's Airborne by Eagles guitarist Don Felder is truly style over substance. For a member of such a phenomenally successful and visible group to release something so nondescript is really food for thought. Felder produced this effort, and he has friends galore pack the proceedings with lots of musicianship, the late Carlos Vega is on drums, as are Joe Vitale, Russ Kunkel, and Tris Imboden; fellow latter-day Eagle Timothy B. Schmit provides backing vocals, and there are appearances by Jeff Lorber, Joe Lala, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mason, and Albhy Galuten, but those talents aren't enough to pull this one out of the bargain bins. With a mega-producer like Galuten contributing, one would think it prudent to ...

| | A Band Of Bees Sunshine Hit Me CD (2002)
Beneath The Veil songs
$14.15 The Bees prance around the same psychedelic pop themes and tones of the Beta Band on Sunshine Hit Me. But somehow they take things to a whole other level, as their familiarity with vintage instruments and addictive laid-back swagger help them avoid the pretension that sometimes follows the Beta Band. Where the Isle of Wight duo's peers might name-check the Beach Boys, the Bees simply use them as a subtle starting point. Gentle harmonies mix perfectly with ornate horns that seem straight off a Stereolab album. It's hard to say what's more compelling about the great "Punchbag": Is it the lyric "I'm too much for caged monkeys" or the utterly warped beat that shuffles back on itself like a stoned boxer? The Bees don't linger in one musical genre like so many neo-psychedelic bands. Instead, they perfect one style and then move on to another, and somehow it all fits together perfectly. The lazy throwback jazz of "Angryman" fits snugly alongside the sublime, wobbly dub of "No Trophy." The latter really is stunning, sounding as if it were recorded in the heart of Jamaica rather than on a semi-desolate island. "A Minha Menina" (an Os Mutantes cover) gives the White Stripes a run for their money, as dollops of mad blues energy ...

| | Steve Quintet Grover Between Now & After CD (2007)
Beneath The Veil songs
$11.15 Drummer/composer/bandleader Steve Grover announces the release of his latest CD Between Now And After. The music features a quintet comprised of David Wells, tenor saxophone; Tim Sessions, trombone; Tony Gaboury, guitar; Chris Van Voorst Van Beest, bass; and Steve Grover, drums. All of the compositions are originals written by Steve Grover, the 1994 winner of The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Composers Competition. The music is rooted in the post-bop tradition with strong melodies and interesting, colorful harmony. “It’s no exaggeration to say that every cut is a winner...There is a lot to hear, think about and enjoy on this great new CD from a Maine jazz master in his prime.” -Up Beat 4/07“Between Now and After has made its way into the public consciousness with a slow burn. It’s [Grover’s] sixth full-length as a bandleader/composer, his first since 2003’s Breath, and it continues his record of releasing supremely listenable and musically engaging collections of original work.” - Portland Phoenix 4/16/08In a recent review of a live performance by the Steve Grover Quintet, Steve Feeney wrote, “The brass/reeds frontline gave the combo a varied voice, alternating unison lines with dialogues and musical squabbles…Like the finest of drummer/bandleaders, [Grover’s] presence is felt at every moment of the music, providing a rhythmic environment of power and feeling.”-Maine Sunday Telegram 2/26/06Steve Grover, drums: Steve has led groups in the New England area since the mid 1980s. A Maine native, he teaches at The University of Maine at Augusta (where he received his degree in music), Bowdoin College and Bates College. In 1994, Steve won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz/BMI Jazz Composers Competition, and in 1996 was a winner in JAZZIZ Magazine's "Percussion On Fire" talent search. Steve has released six CDs, with good reviews appearing in Down Beat, JazzTimes, and Cadence magazines. In addition to performing with his own groups and with clarinetist Brad Terry, Steve has performed with Buddy Tate, Jay McShann, Eddie Gomez, Chris Potter, Marvin Stamm, and many others. Steve lives in Farmingdale, Maine. Tim Sessions, trombone: Tim Sessions is originally from South Dakota, traveling east to attend The Berklee College of Music. While in Boston he became a member of the acclaimed ensemble led by guitarist and composer Baird Hersey, The Year of The Ear. After recording two Arista albums with The Year of The Ear, Tim moved to New York City, where he hooked up for a hitch with singer Lou Rawls, before moving to Maine in 1981. Tim lived, performed and taught in Maine until 1990, when he left for New York again to attend The Manhattan School of Music, where he earned his Master’s degree. Currently Tim is a highly respected New ...
