The duo of director John Frankenheimer and actor Burt Lancaster again join forces with the latter starring as French railway inspector Labiche. With Allied forces closing in on occupied Paris, Herman Goering orders Col. Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield) to move the priceless art from the Jeu de Paume Museum to Germany by train. The museum's curator, Mme. Villard (Suzanne Flon) tries to cajole Labiche into stopping the art train, but he's far more concerned with blowing up a German armaments train. Meanwhile, Papa Boule (Michel Simon), an aged railwayman, uses the distraction of the Allied bombing of a nearby munitions train to burn out the engines of the train carrying the art, and is killed by the Nazis for his efforts. Hotelkeeper Christine (Jeanne Moreau), has managed to persuade Labiche of the importance of the art, and when the livid Waldheim orders him to drive the treasure-bearing train, he's formulated a plan to foil the Nazi theft. He fabricates a series of interlocking ruses which lead the Germans to believe that the train has crossed into Germany, when, in reality, it's simply going in circles around Paris. Lancaster leads an exceptional cast in this engrossing film, based on a true story. Michel Simon is especially memorable, as is the gritty, minimally-lit black and white photography of Jean Tournier.

LANCASTER RULES, WE WILL NEVER SEE HIS CLASS OR VERSATILITY AGAIN! BURT AS A FRENCH RESISTANCE SOLDIER? SACRE BLEAU! AND IN GLORIOUS BLACK AND WHITE! THE ACTION STARTS AS SOON AS HE ENTERS THE CAMARA EYE, AND YES, HE IS DOING HIS OWN STUNTS. WHAT A BONUS FOR THE DIRECTOR! EXCELLENT PRINT, LOOKS LIKE IT WAS FILMED YESTERDAY.

4 stars Stop That Train!
It's the end of WW2 and a German officer has been hoarding captured great works of art in a Paris storehouse. His plan is to smuggle the art on a train into Germany before the Nazis lose their stronglhold over France. Burt Lancaster heads the cast as the leader of French resistance hoping to to prevent The Train from getting to Berlin. Beautifully shot in black and white and almost entirely filmed on location. The sound is very good but in mono, which was, after all, the norm for a film in 1964. Lancaster is great, though he goes a bit over the top here and there. What really set this film apart for me is the amazing photography and the stuntwork. Lancaster and many of the other actors did practically all their own stunts and it really enhances the excitement. No computer effects either, real trains and several trainwrecks are all captured with amazing camerawork. Listen to the audio commentary by Director John Frankenheimer who clearly knew how to take advantage of location photography, dumb luck accidents, and Lancaster's willingness to take chances. You also get Maurice Jarre's excellent score on an isolated track, albiet in mono. Excellent DVD.

Castle Of Cagliostro DVD  (1979) Widescreen

DVD $10.29  5 stars
The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue. 100 ...

March Of The Penguins
March Of The Penguins DVD  (2005) Widescreen

Train movie DVD
DVD $8.85  4.7 stars
Coming from a French director, Luc Jacquet, the miraculous MARCH OF THE PENGUINS would have to be a love story. And so it is. The film explores the mating rituals of the emperor penguin, one of the most resilient animals on earth. Each summer, after a nourishing period of deep-sea feeding, the penguins pop up onto the ice and begin their procession across the frozen tundra of Antarctica. Walking doggedly in single file, they are a sight to behold. Hundreds converge from every direction, moving instinctively toward their mating ground. Once there, they mingle and chatter until they find the perfect mate--a monogamous match that will last a year, through the brutal winter and into the spring. During that time, the mother will give birth to an egg and then leave for the ocean to feed again. The father will stay to protect the egg through the freezing blizzards and pure darkness of winter, which would be deadly to practically any other species. Finally, with spring, the egg hatches and the baby penguins are born. Mothers return from the sea to reunite with their families and feed the starving newborns, while the fathers are finally relieved of their protective duties after months without food. This remarkable story is narrated by Morgan Freeman, whose dignified voice gives the penguins the grave admiration they deserve. But even more incredible is the photography, which shows the penguins hunting underwater, sliding on the ice, and even what definitely looks like kissing. At one point the camera even zooms inside the mouth of a penguin as it regurgitates food for its young. A story of love and, more strikingly, survival, MARCH OF THE PENGUINS is a stirring, eye-opening, and educational experience. In the Antarctic, every March since the beginning of time, the quest begins to find the perfect mate and start a family. This ...
