This is a 124 minute feature film DVD starring Walter Matt hau, Robert Shaw, and Martin Balsam. THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE superbly achieves what few other movies do: a successful blend of thrills, style, comedy, drama, suspense and action. It is the precursor for many thrillers of the 1990s, from indie hits like Quentin Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS, and more popular, Hollywood vehicles like SPEED.
The story focuses on four criminals who hijack a subway car and demand one million dollars from the mayor of New York, threatening to kill one hostage per minute if their demands aren't met. The hijackers are Mr. Blue (Robert Shaw), the crafty and efficient leader; Mr. Green (Martin Balsam), the train driver; Mr. Gray (Hector Elizondo), the hothead; and Mr. Brown (Earl Hindman), a nervous, stuttering man. New York City transit lieutenant Zachary Garber (Walter Matthau) goes above and beyond his call of duty to play negotiator with the hijackers. The camera grabs the viewer by taking him down into dark gritty hallows of the subway tunnels and into the midst of the harrowing situation on the hijacked car. Based on the book by John
Godey, TAKING OF PELHAM is a true classic that depicts the dark, crime-ridden climate of 1970s New York city. Theatrical release: October 2, 1974
Ever since the release of the film, no #6 train has ever been scheduled to leave Pelham Bay Park at either 13:23 or 01:23.
Filmed mostly in the tunnels leading to the decommissioned IND Court St. station in Brooklyn. The station itself served as Grand Central and 28th St.

Taking Of Pelham One Two Three Movie Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) Fast paced, compelling hijack thriller An excellent crimne thriller with a first-rate cast, including Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam and a very young Hector Elizondo! Teh plot is simple: four armed men hijack a New York City subweay train, hold the passengers hostage and demand a million-dollar ransom for their release. The city has one hour to pay and if it is late, one hostage dies for every minute they overrun... The key to any thriller is, of course, is being able to maintain the tension once you've set the pace. Pelham 123 does this with room to spare, as the plot pulls the viewer from scene to scene with hardly time to draw breath. The erformacnces are more than equal to what the stroyline demands as a delightful cat-and-mouse game os played out between the main villain (Shaw)and the police lieutenant trying to stop him (Matthau.) These two play off each other particularly well in an ensemble of some of the finest charactor actors in the business. They really don't make 'em like this anymore... Great Movie Great Movie Classic. Submitted by kkpsi04 (New Orleans) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
classic action I knew the movie was pretty good but thought it would have a grainy and dull brown hue like a lot of seventies movies even after reading a good review on the video. It looks like they did a good job on the transfer and it turns out I like the picture better than the other eighties dvds I bought with it. It doesn't have many extras (just a theatrical trailer)but I only buy for the movie anyway and the trailers are my favorite extra. With this low price ($10) it's a good (great?) purchase.
