Given his enthusiasm for both the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, it's no wonder that author and musician Sid Griffin is a big fan of Chris Hillman, who was a major figure in both groups; Hillman was also the leader of the Desert Rose Band and is a superb bluegrass instrumentalist, not to mention a sideman who's worked with more fine musicians than you can shake a stick at. Given his background, it wouldn't be hard at all to put together an album's worth of great tunes Mr. Hillman ...
| | Blue Rodeo Are You Ready CD (2005)
Big Six Pack songs
$13.89 The Canadian band's tenth studio album follows 2002's Palace of Gold, which found Blue Rodeo reinvigorated and ready to occasionally break out of the country-pop-rock mold that they are inextricably linked to. The ostentatious horns and strings of the group's previous release are gone (except for the stray solo trumpet on the closing two tracks), replaced with a British Invasion feel for the opening cuts. But after the twangy guitars appear on the third song, Rodeo play to their strengths. That's not a bad thing, though, as both founding guitarist/vocalists Greg Keelor and Jim Cuddy have crafted some particularly ...
| | Blue Rodeo Small Miracles CD (2007) Digipak
Big Six Pack album
$10.95 Two decades down the line, Canadian country/folk-rockers Blue Rodeo don't offer many twists on the band's 11th studio set. Perhaps this rootsy outing is trying to get back to the group's roots after a few albums that experimented, generally successfully, with a bigger production, including horns and a moderate Brit Invasion approach. Some of those touches appear here, particularly on the "Day in the Life" styled psychedelic middle of Greg Keelor's nearly seven-minute "Black Ribbon." But generally this is a guitar based -- both strummed and pedal steel -- straightforward approach that ...

Within this decade, this ...
| | Foreigner Head Games CD (1979) Bonus Track; Remastered
Big Six Pack music CDs
$8.39 Although Foreigner's third album, 1979's HEAD GAMES, didn't spawn the radio mega-hits that the band's two albums had (1977's self-titled debut and 1978's DOUBLE VISION), it still managed to keep the band's multi-platinum album string in tact. Foreigner managed to survive its first lineup change prior to the album's recording (bassist Ed Gagliardi was replaced by Rick Wills), and churned out another spirited set of arena rock, including gems like "Love on the Telephone," "Dirty White Boy," "The Modern Day," and the title track. HEAD GAMES showed that Foreigner would have no problem retaining its audience as the '80s were ushered in, something that not all '70s rock superstars were ...
| | Folk Years CDs (2003) Box Set
Big Six Pack songs
$84.99 Includes a 50-page booklet with essays by Greil Marcus and Holly George- Warren as well as individual track annotations by Charles K. Wolfe.
Time-Life's The Folk Years is a massive survey of folk, pop-folk, and folk-rock from the 1950s and 1960s spread out over eight discs. At 15 songs per CD -- equaling 120 total -- this chronicle offers a healthy sampling of popular folk music covering dozens of known and forgotten singers and bands. The emphasis of the collection is on popular folk and popular music influenced by folk, meaning that most of the songs here charted. This emphasis also gives The Folk Years a broader appeal than the average folk revival compilation, making it as fun as it is educational. A number of obvious hits have been included. Harry Belafonte's "Banana Boat Song (Day-O)" helped build an interest for simple ethnic music in the mid-'50s, whereas the Kingston Trio's "Tom Dooley" kicked off the "folk boom" in the summer of 1958. There are early Byrds' hits ("Turn, Turn, Turn" and "Mr. Tambourine Man") and several favorites by the Mamas & the Papas ("Monday, Monday," ...
