Guitar Solos / Pepe Romero
$15.05 The classical guitar is most intimately associated with Spain (and is, in fact, sometimes referred to as the Spanish guitar to distinguish it from the steel-string acoustic guitar more popular in the United States). So it should come as no surprise that the former Spanish colonies in Central and South America should have a rich tradition of guitar music, and that there would be something just a little bit different about it. This collection of Latin American works, all performed by the astoundingly virtuosic Scottish guitarist David Russell, covers most of the major centers of guitar artistry in Central and South America, concentrating particularly on Brazil and Argentina, and focusing on works of the 20th century. There are pieces by the usual suspects (Manuel Ponce, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Dilermando Reis) as well as some impressive works by such living composers as Pablo Escobar, whose solo guitar arrangement of "Chopí", the Paraguayan national dance, is one of the album's highlights, and the Argentine-American composer Jorge Morel, whose Sonatina is the album's longest and most sophisticated work. Russell's playing is insightful and elegant throughout. Very highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

Guitar Solos / Pepe Romero
$23.45 Talking cars rediscover the quirky originality of middle America in this inventive animated film from the folks at Pixar (TOY STORY, FINDING NEMO). Owen Wilson does the voice of arrogant rookie racecar Lightning McQueen, who winds up stranded in the small desert town of Radiator Springs on his way west to a big showdown. Sentenced to community service after literally tearing up the road in a high-speed chase, at first all Lightning can think of is getting back to the world of corporate sponsorship and merchandising tie-ins he loves so well. Eventually, however, the eccentric residents of Radiator Springs begin to grow on him, especially the attractive lady Porsche lawyer (Bonnie Hunt) and a rusty old tow-truck (Larry the Cable Guy). There's also a hippie Volkswagen (George Carlin), a low-riding T-bird (Cheech Martin) and Paul Newman as the gruff, curmudgeonly Doc Hudson, the town judge who harbors his own checkered-flag past. The story may not be new, but Pixar's precision-engineered animation brilliantly illuminates the town and its surrounding cactus-studded vistas down to the minutest detail, and director/writer John Lasseter keeps the film's satiric wit and generous heart in perfect alignment. Adults in the audience should appreciate the film's celebration of old-school American eccentricity, and the kids will dig all the thunderous grit and high-octane wheel burning. Randy Newman composed the score; James Taylor sings one of the songs.
Voiced by an all-star cast including Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, and Bonnie Hunt, this film is about a rebellious race car who learns the meaning of friendship and family. Extras include 2 shorts, featurette, and deleted scenes. Pixar made.

$45.15 | | Marcus Roberts Joy Of Joplin CD (1998)
Guitar Solos / Pepe Romero
$7.69 This is an odd solo piano recital by Marcus Roberts that is sure to upset ragtime purists. Instead of really conveying "the joy of Scott Joplin," Roberts merely uses some of the ragtime composer's melodies as vehicles for his own improvising. The results are often quite jarring, as Roberts feels free to change notes in the themes, alter the speeds, and just use chordal improvising. In addition to eight of Joplin's songs, Roberts contributed eight of his own that mostly have little to do with the structure of ragtime. Hearing his renditions of "The Entertainer," "Maple Leaf Rag," and "The Easy Winners" is analogous to hearing a classical pianist "take off" on a Beethoven symphony, playing spontaneously whatever he thinks fits. This CD is therefore only for listeners with very selective tastes. ~ Scott Yanow

$9.69 Described by The Times as "in a class of her own", voices of the calibre of Kate Royal don't come along very often. She's at home in both opera and recital, has an elegant voice and a magnetic stage presence. Kate Royal's debut recital is an elegant selection of songs and arias including selections from Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne, Delibes's popular Chanson Espagnole from Les Filles de Cadix, arias from Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, lieder by Richard Strauss, and Rodrigo's beautiful Cuatro Madrigales Amatorios.
