Puccini: Tosca / Rescigno, Freni, Pavarotti, Milnes Classical Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Freni is Tosca I ordered this album expecting to be
wowed by Milnes as Scarpia, and by
Pavarotti as Cavaradossi, and was not
disappointed. I was reticent about
whether to bother with Freni as Tosca,
but the truth is that the soprano
manages to shine in the role, bringing
more than her share of passion to it.
It may not be Callas, but Freni out-
classes Caballe' in the role, for example. Submitted by a reviewer (Gainesville, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Tosca for Pavarotti admirers Some of critics said about this album, that Pavarotti is totally incongruous as Cavaradossi, some say, that Tosca's role doesn't suit to Freni at all.
I say Milnes was perfect as Scarpia. His rich, creamy, full voice is perfect for the role of Scarpia. Juast as importantly he was very convincing. Milnes' portrayal will make you despise the character; his booming voice along with excellent, realistic, evil vocal gestures make for a stellar performance.
Pavarotti is my favorite, there's nothing I can do about it. Honestly I bought the CD only because of him. I think Pavarotti is one of those rare tenors, who really understand the role of Mario. Domingo was perfect also. But nothing can stand next to Pavarotti's voice, nothing. Though I had a feeling that he's not putting all of himself out, his voice wasn't full in this recording, it could be more. When you look and listen to him at a live opera performance, you feel more for him. This time it wasn't the best of him, but probably the best I've ever heard at all anyway. Any recording with Pavarotti in it is worth listening. I really enjoyed Pavarotti's performance.
About Freni - I'm not saying she sung bad. It's just, her voice isn't quite suitable for this role. Tosca is dramatical and tragic person, so is her singing par supposed to be. Freni's voice is a bit too light for Tosca. She is a perfect soprano, but not for Tosca. I prefer Kabaivanska, Callas or Stratas more.
Pavarotti, Freni and Milnes earned those 4 stars from me. Any recording with these great artists is very good. One of the best. In my opinion, not the best Tosca, but worth buying.
I'm a big fan of Pavarotti, so I liked it very much, but I can say something critical about it too. If you're a fan of Domingo, I don't recommend this album for you. If you like Milnes - 100 percent buy it. If you like Pavarotti and Freni duets - you have to own this CD.
Overall this Tosca is not ideal for opera lovers (the best is Callas or Kabavanska for me) lovers, but there are still many things to admire about it. For me - great.

$11.69 Mike Wofford, the California-based veteran pianist, brings sterling musicianship to the table on his first disc for Azica. Eight of the 12 tracks feature him in a trio setting with bassist Darek "Oles" Oleszkiewicz and drummer Duncan Moore; the remaining four are solo arrangements. Perhaps as a result of accompanying some of jazz's greatest singers, Wofford has a way of highlighting a song's inherent drama. This is already clear by the time he gets through the melody of the opener, "My Heart Stood Still." He's similarly inventive with "Just One of Those Things," "You Go to My Head" (played as a non-ballad), "Time on My Hands," and "You and the Night and the Music." Wofford also has an eye for unexplored material, like Les McCann's "A Little 3/4," Don Grolnick's chilling minor-key ballad "The Cost of Living," and Tim McMahon's darkly lyrical "Cyprus." On Duke Ellington's classic blues "Take the Coltrane," he opts to split the 12-bar chorus evenly, trading sixes rather than fours with Duncan Moore. (One wonders why this isn't done more often.) To complete the program, Wofford includes his own churning mid-tempo swinger, "H2," as well as two beauties by Oleszkiewicz. ~ David R. Adler
