Original score composed by David Hirschfelder. Composer David Hirschfelder's soundtrack to the film Elizabeth nicely evokes the spirit of the era to which this British monarch lent her name; the music also proves adept at capturing the picture's drama and intrigue without the bombast which so often sinks scores of this kind. ~ Jason Ankeny

Elizabeth Soundtrack
$16.45 David Parks first met Richard Hundley over the phone in 1989 and for over twenty years has sung his songs in various concerts in the United States, Ireland, South Africa, Eastern Europe, and Canada. The idea for this CD began when David Parks was sponsored by the U.S. Department of State to present an American art song recital (including those of Hundley’s) in several venues in Bosnia-Herzegovina. In 2005 Parks brought Mr. Hundley to the Ithaca College campus to present two days of master classes on his songs. It was after these sessions that Hundley encouraged Parks to record a group of his songs. After several discussions with other voice teachers and singers, it became apparent to Parks that a complete CD of Mr. Hundley’s songs would be the only possible outcome to this project. This recording is the first complete CD of the songs of Richard Hundley. It includes nineteen songs that are published by Boosey & Hawkes, of which six songs which are from Hundley’s latest publication, 10 Songs (Boosey & Hawkes). This CD also features the premiere recording of ten of Mr. Hundley’s songs.Hundley's songs are studied and performed by most college and conservatory voice majors in the United States. Some of the songs are vocally easy for young singers, but most of the songs require a developed voice with strong technical prowess. These songs are known for their soaring melodic contours, sensitive setting of the text, and piano accompaniments that are colorful and create a nearly equal partnership with the singer. In his article, “Yankee Lieder” in Opera News, Paul Sperry wrote: “Richard Hundley says his objective as a composer is to ‘crystallize emotion.’ He succeeds amazingly well. Some of his pieces are heart-stoppingly beautiful: The Astronomers, Come Ready and See Me, Waterbird. . . . His melodies stay in the mind. In his harmonies and open spacings he sounds American in the sense that Copland created a recognizably American sound. And he has the American gift for exuberance and humor: look at Epitaph on a Wife, Some Sheep are Loving, Postcard from Spain, and I do! for examples. . . . There is no question that he understands both the voice and piano perfectly. And singers love his songs.”Parks, whose voice has been described as a youthful lyric tenor with crystal-clear ...
