Among the European styles reworked in Africa and the Caribbean was military fife-and-drum music and its civilian pipe-and-tabor equivalent, both of which fit nicely with various African equivalents. This is an enchanting (though awfully short) example of the sort of thing that resulted: a new music with clear European as well as local roots. The results sound very Caribbean -- unless you know the older sega of Mauritius, Reunion, and the Seychelles. ~ John Storm Roberts

It's perhaps ironic that you don't need to be able to understand the words to appreciate this celebration of the 700th anniversary of the birth of the great Iranian poet Rumi. But these performances by father and son, along with the other four members of the ensemble, transcend language to reach pure emotion.
