| | Memoirs Of A Geisha CD (2005) Original Soundtrack
Israel In Egypt
$12.09 For the soundtrack to 2005's MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, Hollywood composer John Williams unveils one of his most inventive scores. The film, based on Arthur Golden's bestselling novel about a poor girl who becomes a refined geisha in World War II-era Japan, is enhanced by Williams's emotive (and often melancholy) music, which deftly blends orchestral works with passages that feature traditional Japanese instruments such as the shakuhachi and the koto. Remarkably, this mix of western and eastern sounds never comes across as forced, thanks to both Williams's bold musical vision and the outstanding solo contributions of cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman. The opening track, "Sayuri's Theme," is a hauntingly beautiful piece, while "The Fire Scene and the Coming of War" evokes an appropriately ominous tone. What is perhaps most striking about GEISHA's score, however, is the use of quiet, reflective moments and pure silence, with Williams effectively adhering to ...

| | Stevan Pasero Ballets Opera & Masterworks CD (1999) (Import)
Israel In Egypt
$13.99 From Sugo Music president and uber-producer Stevan Pasero, Ballets Opera & Masterworks covers a number of classic pieces transcribed for the classical guitar by Pasero. While he takes some liberties with key changes here and there, the music is all performed beautifully. The selection of pieces appears to be driven more by basic layman popularity than adaptability to the guitar (e.g. Beethoven's "5th," which comes out rather weak), but he makes the most of the ones that can be adapted more readily, taking on an air of Andrés Segovia (though staying away from Segovia's beloved Bach). On the whole, it's a very nice album. For classical guitar, the standard is generally Segovia, and perhaps John Williams, but Pasero can keep up with the greats. If not for the full time, at least for stretches of glory. ~ Adam Greenberg
Ballets, Operas & Masterworks is a compilation of Stevan Pasero's symphonic transcriptions for guitar that gained critical acclaim worldwide and helped launch his impressive career as one of the most dynamic classical-crossover musicians of our time. This CD features some of the most enduring compositions of all time such as Carmen, Bolero, Canon in D Major, and Symphony No.5 (Beethoven). If you like classical guitar performed by one of the most gifted musicians of our time, this is the CD you may want to own. This collection of transcriptions and original works is a noteworthy addition to the expanding guitar repertoire. “The flawless renditions of "Clare de Lune," "Romeo and Juliet," Pachelbel's "Canon," "Sleeping Beauty," and two pieces from Vivaldi's Four Seasons range from stirring to sensitive in their performance while remaining faithful to the original in each case!” - Backroads Music/Heartbeats, All Music Guide. ARTIST NOTES: Stevan Pasero is known worldwide as one of the most influential and versatile guitarists/composers of the past decade. Guitar aficionados love him, fans around the world are loyal to his music, critics praise his musicianship, while his recordings have sold millions. Mr. Pasero is featured on numerous recordings, has transcribed over 30 major symphonic works, produced more than 250 studio ...

Israel In Egypt
$16.75 Maybe this is Abaji giving in to his tangled Middle Eastern roots. Maybe it's the indulgence he's allowing himself before getting back on track. With the help of oud and gimbri player Majid Bekkas (from Morocco) and Indian percussionist Ramesh Shotham, he's all over the place. Even the virtuosic guest Djivan Gasparyan -- who adds his trademark duduk to a couple of tracks here -- can't make a great deal of sense out of the morass that finds no direction here. It's all very well, for example, having a sitar-guitar built for you, but then to play it with a bow -- although perhaps adventurous -- also defeats the purpose a little. Taking chances is one thing; likewise stretching boundaries. This does the former and attempts the latter. ...
