| | Harold Budd She Is A Phantom CD (1994) (Import)
Tartini: Violin Concertos Vol 4 /Guglielmo, L'Arte Dell'Arco
$15.65 Personnel: Harold Budd (piano); Tom Linker (piano, synthesizer); Heather Barringer (vibraphone, percussion); Jay Johnson (marimba, percussion). Liner Note Author: David Snow. Recording information: Westminster Church, Minneapolis, MN (11/20/1993). Illustrator: Zak Wilson. Photographer: Greg Edwards. Unknown Contributor Role: Oliver Di Cicco. She Is a Phantom is a set of mournful dirges performed live in concert by Harold Budd. It is a smooth blend of acoustics and electronics with snippets of existential spoken-word poetry. Budd uses some pre-recorded material, but that is the expectation in live music performances of intricate electronic sound designs. Budd's sound design is definitely intricate. The compositions are from Budd's discography, making this a nice introduction to his music. It is also representative of classic minimalism -- electronic and otherwise. Budd's stature in the e-music community has him on a level with stalwarts such as Brian Eno, Robert Rich, Steve Roach, and Robert Fripp. ~ Jim Brenholts The delicate beauty of Harold Budd's music can gradually draw you in with its hypnotic yet elusive nature. SHE IS A PHANTOM, done in conjunction with the avant-classical ensemble Zeitgeist, mines the dewdrop territory of THE PLATEAUX OF MIRROR or THE PEARL rather than the romantic string fantasies of Budd's last solo work, BY DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT. In fact, the only link that this disc shares with the latter is the composer's desire to recite his stark but evanescent poetry against the requisite spare musical backing. This element tends to detract from the immediacy of Budd's fragile vignettes. PHANTOM never gets too demonstrative, and thankfully so. The album features some of Budd's most evocative works in years. The sparkling synth and piano textures of "Nearly Awakened..." and the gentle cymbal strokes circulating through "Emboldened/My Dreams Perish" are two noteworthy examples. The album's brief 18 tracks flow through you, as though you're gradually descending the length of a spiral marble staircase. At the conclusion of PHANTOM, you're left breathless and swept up in the grandeur.

$15.19 My oldest sister tells me that, when I was three, I climbed on to our piano bench and picked out Silent Night, with one finger. I began taking piano lessons at age five, and studied for most of my school years. I have had the joy of playing for many wonderful singers, including Julie Andrews at an organization for the blind, when I was a teenager. I have been a director for four musicals. For one of them I was nominated as a runner up for best musical director of the year. I have played at Don't Tell Mama in New York, opened for Holly Near at a national convention for women, and played for choral groups as well as solo artists. I have played in Atlanta for a cabaret show, and currently accompany musical theater classes at a local junior college as well as solo performances during the year. .
