Gorgeous, Lush Recording of Great Music
The music recorded on this disc is nothing short of pure excellence. Evocative and thrilling, they stand quite well on their own, apart from the visual experience of the film. But they were written for film, and they are outstanding examples of the best of that craft. Newman's music is always interesting, intelligent and never overbearing. The music that underlies the mysterious Blue Water sapphire and the desert sequences of BEAU GESTE is pure ethereal heaven, and the opening theme/overture is downright exhilarating. In the HUNCHBACK score, Mr. Newman's expressions of sorrow and unrequited love betray an understanding of humanity that transcends the written word, and it is doubtful that any other composer would have stated these musical phrases quite so delicately. The recording is beautifully balanced, and Mr. Stromberg once again sets forth an effort to be emulated by those that will follow in his footsteps. This disc is an absolute must for the serious film music collector.
