| | Dinah Washington Unforgettable CD Dinah Washington Discography of CDs
After her hit of "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" in 1959, Dinah Washington largely discarded her blues and jazz roots (at least on recordings) and played the role of a pop star. This CD (which has the original LP program of 12 songs joined by six others) finds Washington singing brief (mostly under three-minute) versions of standards in hopes of gaining another hit. The backing is strictly commercial and, although some may enjoy "This Bitter Earth," "The Song Is Ended" and "A Bad Case of the Blues," the music is consistently predictable and disappointingly forgettable. ~ Scott Yanow
Her greatest (or at least most influential) single track, plus six bonus cuts and much better sound than 1963 original. ~ Ron Wynn
Includes liner notes by Lou Sidran and Cliff Priess.
Personnel includes: Dinah Washington (vocals); Belford Hendricks (arranger, conductor); Nat Goodman (conductor); Ernie Freeman (piano); Barney Kessel, Rene Hall (guitar); Red Callender (bass); Earl Palmer (drums).

Dinah Washington's albums from the 1950s are among her best. On this '59 date, she sings with Belford Hendricks's chorus and orchestra (which includes Joe Zawinul on piano and Milt Hinton on bass), and her voice soars elegantly over the rich string arrangements and backing choir. Washington's vocals capture the ...

| | John Patitucci Imprint CD (2000)
Unforgettable
$9.59 When GRP dropped John Patitucci in 1996, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The bassist found a supportive new home in Concord Jazz, where his creativity was encouraged and he was able to take his share of chances. Just as 1998's cerebral Now was a departure from 1996's introspective, deeply personal One More Angel, Imprint finds Patitucci surprising his followers once again by emphasizing Latin elements. Employing drummer Jack DeJohnette and saxman Chris Potter, as well as Latino improvisers, pianist Danilo Perez and drummer/percussionist Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, Imprint is the most Latin-minded album that he recorded in the 1990s. However, Imprint isn't Latin jazz in the sense that Poncho Sanchez is Latin jazz -- it is more intellectual and less direct, and it's not as accessible. ...
| | Scott Hamilton Ballad Essentials CD (2000)
Unforgettable
$9.65 Tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton is something of a jazz anomaly. Young enough to be part of the generation of players influenced by John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Ornette Coleman, he draws his primary inspiration from an earlier generation of saxophonists. Don Byas, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins and, of course, Lester Young--the big-toned, warm, breathy tenor giants of the '30s and '40s--are the icons that fire Hamilton's approach. BALLAD ESSENTIALS is a superb cross-section of his work, recorded with various lineups for the Concord label between 1977 and 1995.
Unsurprisingly, the program is all standards, rendered with fabulous technique and delivered with genuine, unabashedly sentimental warmth. Hamilton's version of "Everything Happens ...

$46.59 The word jazz and the term "mass appeal" are seldom used in the same sentence. Occasionally, a well-marketed jazz artist will connect with popular culture -- singer Diana Krall, for example -- but label execs usually assume that jazz won't sell as well as rock, R&B, rap, country, adult contemporary, or Latin music. However, there was a time when jazz did, in fact, enjoy mass appeal. It was called the swing era, and Lionel Hampton was among the many swing stars who connected with popular culture ...
