This is the sort of thing that will place high in the results of an internet search on the phrase "roots of acid jazz." Organist Jimmy Smith and guitarist Wes Montgomery were already titans of the jazz world before they teamed up, and FURTHER ADVENTURES, their second album together, enhanced the legends of both men. For the most part, it's a slow-burning affair full of simmering grooves, laid-back solos, and hypnotic riffs. The tone is exemplified by a mellow jazz/bossa nova version of the '60s pop hit "Call Me," digging deeply into a loungey feel. Interestingly, though, bop boss Montgomery pulls the bluesy Smith into his own axis on a version of "'Round Midnight" that finds Smith venturing into more harmonically adventurous territory than usual.
Recorded in New York on September 21 & 28, 1966. Originally issued on Verve (8766). Includes liner notes by Michael Zwerin and Gene Santoro.
Personnel includes: Jimmy Smith (organ); Wes Montgomery (guitar); Oliver Nelson (arranger); Grady Tate (drums); Ray Barretto (percussion).

Oliver Nelson arranged and conducted the tunes for this album; his three big-band charts essentially consist of a few heavy choruses up front, after which the horns get out of the way so Jimmy and Wes can do their their thing. Montgomery and Smith also do two quartet numbers with Grady Tate on drums and Ray Barretto on congas. As a result, there's plenty of real jazz here, unlike some other Creed Taylor-produced Montgomery records.
In retrospect, it's surprising that this this ...

This two-fer, which compiles two of the band's late-period albums, 1976's 15 BIG ONES and 1977's LOVE YOU, should give both critics and fans much to chew on. While not up to the caliber of milestones like PET SOUNDS and SURF'S UP, both sets contain the hallmarks of the Boys' best material: irresistible melodies, inventive, intricate arrangements, and melting harmonies from heaven.
15 BIG ONES, the album on which Brian Wilson re-teamed with the rest of the band after a hiatus of many years, alternates originals with covers such as "Rock and Roll Music" and "Chapel of Love." As usual, Wilson's compositions outshine the rest, as on the pop carousel of "It's OK" and the delightfully quirky "TM Song." The real treasure, however, is found on LOVE YOU. Though the brilliant studio sheen of classic Beach Boys production is absent here, what remains is an album of honest, original, idiosyncratic pop songs. A trip through Brian Wilson's warped, sunshine-splattered funhouse, LOVE YOU delivers up gems of sweet melancholy like "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" and the ridiculous, amazing ...
| | Holly Near Simply Love: The Women's Music Collection CDs (2000)
Further Adventures Of Jimmy And Wes
$22.49 While Holly Near's commitment to women's music and women's issues has been unwavering, she has never been a women's music artist entirely, or even primarily. Rather, she comes out of a tradition dating back to Woody Guthrie and Aunt Molly Jackson -- songwriter/performers concerned with a broad range of left-leaning political causes who are usually identified as folksingers. It was not until her 1978 album Imagine My Surprise!, on which she came out as a lesbian, that Near formally embraced women's music, and even then, after the first blush of enthusiasm for the movement, she went back to addressing a variety of issues (and did not remain a lesbian exclusively, either). You might say that Near's relationship to women's music has been like Eric Clapton's to the blues: each artist is identified with the genre and talks it up endlessly, but neither plays it all -- or even most of -- the time. Nevertheless, Holly Near has written and sung a lot of women's music over the years, including some of the best songs in the field. Simply Love: The Women's Music Collection is a two-CD, 28-track compilation covering her albums since 1976, including half a dozen newly recorded performances. Not surprisingly, seven tracks from Imagine My Surprise! are included, with no more than three songs from any other album. In her women-oriented songs, Near is equally concerned with political issues and with personal statements; effective as her political songs are, the songs that concern relationships between women are even more striking and complex. With its chronological sequencing, the album also serves as a selective history of Near's career, tracing her flirtations with various musical styles (folk, contemporary pop/rock, and even show music and jazz-rock), and her evolution from a true singer/songwriter to a singer who, in recent years, has not been much heard from as a songwriter. That disappearance as a writer contributes to the album's valedictory tone; there is little here to overcome the general impression that women's music enjoyed its golden age in the 1970s. But even if that is the case, Near makes the case for herself as an elder stateswoman of the genre on Simply Love by singing some of its best songs. ~ William Ruhlmann
